Strong exhaust ?

Strong exhaust ?
On a recent road trip, my father was following me down the highway. He told me that the exhaust from my truck was strong and burned his eyes like a rich fuel mixture on a gas engine. I'm wondering what that could be from and how to fix it.
Some possably relevent stats:
-350 mi trip
-70mph adv. speed
-1983 F350 4sp 3.55 4x4 175,000mi
-2000# load
-13.5 mpg adv. fuel economy on trip

Remember, lots of people are very sensitive to diesel fumes.
I personally can not stand the smell of gasoline exhaust, so it goes both ways.
Nothing on earth smells as bad or burns you eyes as much as an over rich gas motor exhaust. I can smell them 3 miles in front of me.
