Blocking off EGR make more power ??

My adv auto teacher was talkn about how if you block off the EGR youll gain alittle bit more power cus it sucks in exhaust gases from you headers to the intake. So i tried it and noticed alittle difference but the may just be me. What do you think

Sounds like you're desperate for extremely small changes. All the effort you put into modding your engine can be spent finding a 5.0 from the junkyard and swap it in.

I doubt you noticed a difference. It was probably in your head.

Hard to say if your motor was calibrated/tuned/designed to use the EGR to prevent detonation. You'll find out if you block it, and you'll be making less power if so. EGR doesn't cost much power, not enough to fool with imo.

Small improvement...maybe

I'm with Granny on this one - small/negligible gain. Probably more in one's mind than noticed by the calibrated butt.

Yup, the idea behind EGR is to take metered amounts of exhaust gas back into the cylinders. The idea is that exhaust is basically oxygen depleted, so it is inert. By circulating an inert gas, the tendency to knock or ping can be reduced, in effect its like raising the octane rating of the fuel. EGR's primary function is emission reduction however, but its can allow the car to use more advance or higher compression without having to use a higher octane.

Quick translation, the truck likely won't pass Cali emission testing with the EGR blocked off.

Sure, fuel + air = fire. Less air and less fuel equals less fire. By recirculating a gas that has no oxygen in it, you slow the combustion down. Slower combustion means less pinging, the same effect that higher octane (slower burning fuel) has. So think of the EGR system as the vehicle's built in octane booster.

Umm isn't the EGR used to reduce NOx? high cylinder temps create NOx, By adding exhaust gas into the intake it cools the cylinders thereby reducing NOx.
