VIN number

im about to buy a parts truck that hopefully has the engine i want in it. the VIN is 1FMEU15G2CLA29956 i know one of the numbers or letters in there ID's the engine size but im not sure which one.

I would just ask this in the 1980-1986 section (the truck is an early 80s) but this is the only section i ever post in so i thought i would just stay here.

the 17-character VIN is divided into four sections:

The first three characters uniquely identify the manufacturer, make and type of vehicle (with the exception of manufacturers that produce fewer than 500 vehicles per year).

The second section consists of five characters (VIN positions four to eight) and identify the attributes of the vehicle. For each type of vehicle (passenger cars, MPVs, trucks, buses, trailers, motorcycles or incomplete vehicles other than trailers), different information is reported.

The third section of the VIN consists of one character which is the "check" digit, a security feature of this numbering system. This character can be numeric or the letter X.

The fourth section consists of eight characters, positions 10-17 of the VIN. The first character, position number 10, represents the vehicle model year. Position 11 represents the plant of manufacture. Positions 12 through 17 form a sequential production number

As old as the truck is, a visual confirmation would probably be better than the VIN route. There's no telling what might have happened over the last 20 or so years, so better safe than sorry. JMO.

According to fishie, I believe the vin code for the engine would be G, which I believe means either 351M or a 2 bbl 351W

not 100% sure though.

if you can take both bolts that hold the gooseneck (the thing that holds in thermostat) off with a socket&ratchet, it is a 351W. if you would have to use a wrench to access one bolt, it is a 302.
