VIN # Locations
Long Story Short - My 2002 Explorer has a VIN number on the driver side door sticker that does not match the one on the dashboard (viewed thru the front windsheild). The car was in an accident and the door was replaced...that is why the VINs do not match. Now I just bought the car and need to register but my state requires a "VIN inspection" In which they need to compare the VIN on the title with the VIN on the vehicle in two locations. So my question is, where exactly are some other locations I can find my VIN number? Such as the engine compartment? Thank You!

Not sure if things have changed, this is from a '93/'94 manual.
"A seventeen-digit combination of numbers and letters forms the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is stamped on a metal tab that is riveted to the instrument panel close to the windshield. The VIN number is viewable by looking through the front windshield on the driver's side. The VIN number is also found on the Safety Compliance Certification Label."
It appears that it is in only 2 locations.

There should be some numbers on the frame and engine that can be traced back to your vin number. If you have a helpful local police department, their detective that deals with auto thefts should easliy be able to tell you where to look. The detective I worked with could figure out the vin of a stripped out vehicle whether he just had the frame or engine.
