Where have you heard this at? I know a F250 could do this, but not a F150.
You can only run 36" tires with a 4" lift with some rubbing.
I'm getting a 6" lift to be able to run 36" tires without any rubbing.
I know 37s wouldn't have any problems either with a 6" lift.
I wouldn't want to try to run 39s with a 6" lift though.
Your best bet would be to get a 9" lift from broncograveyard or skyjacker, and I still don't know if you could fit 40s with no problems on a 9" lift.
I was lookin for this 9" lift that skyjacker claims of, but as far as I know its only available for the 150....i hope it is avail for 250s though... I had a 79 150 custom with right around 10" of total lift, 7"sus and 3" body, and it took 40's no prob. Had 42s on it at one point.

I don't know if they sell any more than a 6" lift for a F-250, if that. I know they sell 4" lifts, the only other way would be to have someone custom make it or do it yourself.
Ivan and some others could tell you more about this, and you could check his gallery for ideas for more lift.
I know the website only has 9" lifts for the 150's but for some of the years the 250 was already 2" higher than the 150. So a 6" lift would actually make it an 8" lift over the 150. I wonder what the difference in suspension setup there is though. Thicker coils? I know that on Chev's the 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton coils are the same diameter on some models.
Actually I think F-250 highboys have a 3-4" higher supsension than the F-150s(4x4 of coarse).
But, yeah that's why you don't see any manufactured lifts higher than 4" lifts for F-250s.
Why is it that most companies make 8" springs for newer FORDs and all years of CHEVYs but not the older 70's FORD trucks? Is it possible to use 8" springs from a newer Ford ? I'm not sure of the length and were the center pin is located.
I just installed the skyjacker 6" lift on my 78 f-250 and I have 35s with room for more, but since i am going to run 38-39s so i took the front springs to a local shop and they re-arched them for me and got another 2 inches out of them, plus it only cost me about 150 the pair. i have not yet installed the bigger tires, but after i put on the re-arched front springs and it made a big difference, for a total of 8" of lift up front. Now it looks like there will definately be the room for them. there is a pic in my gallery, sorry you can't really see the front tire space, but you will see the diffence in height from the 8" front to 6" rear ( i have not yet done the rear springs)

How do you figure? Look in my gallery, I have 35's on saggy STOCK f100 suspension. I'm planning on lifting it cause I get some rubbing when I flex, but it's perfectly driveable as it is.
For the Highboy lift 4" is all that available off the shelf. I know of a person who put newer super duty springs on their truck. You would have to swap out the rear leafs, hanger and shackles since the highboy stuff is only 2.5" wide and the rest of the rear springs are 3" wide. You would also have to get at least an 8" lift spring to make it worth the conversion in my opion. I have a 3" body lift and I clear 38's no problem on the street. Some trail duty causes a little contact if I get out of hand. If you got the 4" lift from skyjacker you should be able to clear a 40 if you keep it to the street. I would get the lift kit and then get the bushwacker cut out fender flares. It'll give you another couple of inches fender clearance. Keep in mind that the more you lift it the more stuff you have to fabricate. Too much lift and you have to get longer drive shafts, custom brake lines, custom steering components and start changing driveline angles. You'll eat up axle parts with the larger tires so make sure your axle can handle it. I'm pushing my luck with the stock D44 front and 38's. If you go to 40's I hope you have a D60 or a built D44. Those are a few things to keep in mind when doing a lift. I'm currently in the development stages for putting 2.5 ton axles and 52" tires under my highboy.
I understand you can fit 35" tires under a stock suspension, but like you said when your truck flexs it rubs.
I was saying you can not wheel your truck with 35s on a stock suspesion, at least not like I do, which involves a good bit of flexing.
