I recently ran diagnostics tests on my 94 Ranger w/ a 4.0L V6 via the CHECK ENGINE light method, and received the following error codes during the KOER test.
129 - No MAP or Mass Air Flow Sensor change during "goose" test - MAP MAF
167 - No Throttle Position Sensor change in "goose" test (must be at least 25% rotation) - TPS
I am uncertain whether I was performing something wrong during the actual tests, or that either the components are faulty. I ran this test several times, each time pulling the same codes. Is there somewhere either on this forum or somewhere else that clearly outlines the problem(s) and their solutions pertaining to these codes? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Did you floor it when prompted? Do you have any vacuum leaks? Is the plug for the MAF connection tight and clean. Does the throttle cable open the throttle plate all the way? If you did and everthing else is OK I can email you the pinpoint tests for these codes.
As noted, you realy have to MASH the pedal for a moment when the goose test asks you to do so. I thought it was painful, but the TPS code did go away after that.
Let us know what is left over after you try this again.
Alfred & Billy are right, you need to QUICKLY go to wide open throttle, then QUICKLY LET OFF, as Billy described, so the computer can measure several sensors response parameters, TPS is one of them.
Don't worry about over speeding the engine, just do it quickly, the rev limiter will prevent you from going too far.
I was uneasy about doing it the first time too, again, the trick is to floor it quickly, then let off quickly.
Thanks for all of your assistance. The error codes were most likely due to my not stepping on the accelerator properly. I'll try the test again and see if the error codes go away after that. Thanks again.
I also have a 1994 4.0 V-6 and need to read the codes. I have a copy, from a recent post, of how to perform the tests but cannot locate the needed connections. The instructions say they are located on the passenger side at the firewall shroud but I cannot find. Are the connections(plugs) inside the passenger compartment or under the hood? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Underneath the hood on the driver's side, the EEC-IV connector is mounted to the side of the fuse box closest to the engine firewall (at least this is where it's located on mine, but should be the same). Then, it is just a matter of removing the cover and placing a small jumper wire between the terminal on the small gray connector and the upper right terminal on the large black connector. Hope this helps you out.
