Number on Firewall - what does it mean?

My 48 F-3 has the number 2CS22F326 stamped into the center of the upper firewall just below the vent. The F3 part is self-explanatory but I am curious about what the rest of this number may represent? I have read about various places where numbers may be stamped on these old trucks but have not see anything about a number stamped on the firewall...

Seems like we did a thread on this a while back. The consensus was that it was some internal number used by Ford. We may have been talking about numbers that were painted on though, I just can't remember for sure.

Just went out to the 48 F1 Panel, I looked below the vent ON THE FIREWALL didn't see a thing.
I got a rag and rubbed so hard a Genie appeared out of the exhaust pipe.
First words outta my mouth were "I'll be Danmed", He said "You got it, no sence giving you any more."

Story of my life.

I have a similar number on one my 51's. The number is preceded by KC for Kansas City and then I think the letter H, then a 5 digit number which I've assumed was a body number. My other 51 doesn't have this, and neither of my 52's has such a number. I've stripped paint and scrubbed hard trying to find the number on the other cabs, but have found nothing. This number is in the upper fire wall above the seam and below the air inlet punched in with a die, not painted or on a plate. The number seems to have no relationship to the VIN. Stu

I have the number on the firewall of the '50 cab I got off of a firetruck and am using on my '49 F-2. I don't think I can remember seeing the number on any other truck I have torn apart.

Hey Vern,

Does your serial number show up on the frame, and if so, where??......
I get conflicting info on whether or not a 48 would have an ID plate. My glove box door has two small holes in it, as though something was riveted there.
I'm going to the DMV tomorrow.......hope they don't give me any grief over the VIN.

Cool! Thanks Vern. Was your truck by any chance originally Vermillion? That would square with other info I've gathered over the years.

2 - color prefix for Vermillion
CS - Chester PA assembly plant
22 - Day
F - Month (June)
326 - production number of car scheduled that day

SgtCrump: Your 48 should have at least the serial numbers (without the 88RC prefix) on the top of the frame rail inside the engine compartment. Mine is located on the passenger side just behind the front crossmember. Very faint stamping.
Your truck should also have a Data Plate affixed to the firewall - passenger side top corner (near the solenoid if a V8) AND it should have a Rating Plate affixed to the glovebox door. It is held in place by the hinge and a couple of small screws.

Tim,

Thanks for the info. Yes, it is Vermillion. From what others say here I suppose some trucks have that number on the firewall and some don't. At least I now know the truck originated in Chester, PA. Thanks.

Sarge,

"Hope they don't give you any grief?". The DMV is the king of grief. Expect grief my friend. I'm not mathematically inclined, but I learned long ago that the amount of grief you get at the DMV is inversely proportional to the amount of information you have on the truck.

I did find some numbers on the front crossmember of my 48 that were not all identifiable, but none on the top of the frame rail. Like Tim said there was originally a plate riveted to your glove box door with the VIN on it. Here in NH, it wasn't too tough to get my old truck registered since we are not a title state for vehicles over 10 years old, but I did have to have someone physically look at my VIN plate and fill out a special form.

Thanks Vern,

Yeah, I was wishfully thinkin'.........the only hope is that sometimes they are nicer 'cuz I'm an officer, although even that doesn't guarantee anything, as I found out once, many years ago, when, as the bus training officer for the local Border Patrol station, I took two new trainees to the DMV in Calif for their bus test, and despite all of us being in uniform (and armed!) , I was loudly and publicly chewed out by a clerk for approaching her counter without waiting in line, despite the fact that the supervisor told me to do exactly that.

I can only find what look to be part numbers on the frame pieces.....haven't pulled up the floor piece to look at the tranny.......

Well, I'm going in this morning....sans truck...to find out what tortures await me....if you guys don't hear anything in three days....contact my widow, and give her a fair price for it.......

I'll check my 49 tonight and see what I can see.

George, I did make a post awhile back about firewall numbers but they were painted on and not stamped in. They were down low in the center of the firewall and I'm guessing were internal numbers at the factory. Man, you got a good memory

I checked my truck last night, I too have number stamped into the upper firewall just below the cowl in two rows and sizes. Here they are;

7 D L 1 6 E
1 C O 4 (the "C" might be an "O")

Can anybody decipher them for me?? The truck is a 49 F1 (supposedly)

Thanks
Bobby

OK...well the DMV was a breeze. I found the number under the paint, and scraped it clean. The inspector all but kissed me, saying he saw me pull into the line, and was dreading it. Inside the clerk was a sweet young thing, who was very patient, and when she couldn't find an original selling price to determine the sale tax, which I was dreading, she charged me $5. I even paid for a personalized plate, and still got it all done for $109.
Wasn't even much of a line.......in the past I've waited four hours for my turn.
