Ive got the new 3v and after looking under it Ive decided that the exhaust is too nice to just cut up and throw away this early. I figure for now Ill just replace the muffler. I see tons of thread on the FM 40, delta and super. My question is does anyone have any experience with the FM race series mufflers. They make the 10 series and 40, 50, 60, 30, etc. all in a race series. What is the difference in the race vs regular mufflers and does anyone have experience with one of them on a v10? I figure the race would be opened up inside even more.
use a big block street muffler, i.e. 50 or 70 series. and do not cut up the stock system at all. make your own from the collector back as you just may not like the sound a v10 makes with a race system.
plus if you want some sticker shock ! price the stock system, it's one piece from the collector back. OWCH!. we have many threads about the mufflers and the v10 here.
i have a fm 70 big block. nice sound at idle and just loud enough for ME when running.
the pipes used where a fm tail pipe kit fit and welded to all the stock mounts . the stock 1 piece is in my garage on altered.
Thanks for the responses. Capt I know there are many previous threads on the topic but I couldnt find one specifically on the FM "race series" mufflers. Ill take your advice though and save the entire collector back exhaust. I could actually remove the collector/Y as well and just run duals into a dual in/out muffler or keep them true.
from the way the flange is yes. i you can make up a flange to weld on.
but sound wise this a a 72 deg fireing order. it sure has NO sound like a v8. it's more like 2 -5 cylinder vw /audis at one time.
don't destory any thing you can't bolt back if you don't like it, i tryed a 40 fm to loud for MY tastes 50 a bit better the 70 seems to ME to be MY happy medium. immo.
the sound of this motor is from this motor only.so it's each to his own . good luck maybe your liking will be your 1st try.
Well Capt you are about the most qualified to answer this next question.
Since I will be running the Ford Headers whenever they get here, what type of system do you think would feel the most benefits INCLUDING the headers? You have stated you put them on and tested with them. Do you think there was anything to be found by going to another exhaust setup OR do you think that your setup flows plenty for those headers, afe, tuner, and whatever else you have?
i am very happy with how mine runs and its 13.46 city and 15 plus or minus a little highway at this point. i do not see any need for the headers as shown on the dyno, the factory cast iron header works just as well.
I installed a free flowing mandrel formed "Y" pipe and a Dynamax Ultra Flo (WLK-17235 from Summit Racing). Sound definitely changed for the better.
Deeper and a little V-8 like. Resonance points are the same as before about 37 MPH +/- 2-3 MPH and 50 MPH +/- 2-3 MPH in OD. The 50 MPH is not there in 3rd so I suspect its a specific rpm related resonance, but 37 MPH is there in 3rd or OD so its probably something else. Neither is objectional but is noticable now and was before the exhaust changes. Wish it wasn't there.
Mine is an Excursion 2003 that have a lot NVH weights hanging here and there to cancel out resonsance. They missed some.
