pretty sure its the starter

starter wouldnt disengage after starting truck some times. last time it smoked the cable from alt. to battery ground. is the starter mounted on pass. side of trans. this is on a 1987 f-150 lariat automatic/ w/c6 trans.

Yes, the starters typically mounted on the rear passenger side of the engine.
Which engine do you have in it?

well what you described is not the starter it is the starter relay on the fender.

I gotta go with 390 on this one - at least to start the troubleshooting process. It sounds to me like the relay is not releasing - the contacts are sticking together. I would start with the relay and replace it with a new one or at least a known good working one and see if that fixes the problem. At this point in time it would probably be worth your while to replace or at least clean up all of you battery connections at the battery, starter, relay etc.
