99 Explorer missing at speed..

A while back my wifes Explorer 5.0l check engine light came on. I replaced the EGR valve and swapped out the plugs. Its been a few months but pretty much since then the thing will miss while driving, not at idle. The check engine light comes on even after reseting it a few times and it points to the EGR valve. So tonight I have taken it apart again and cleaned out the EGR tube w/ some carb/choke cleaner and wife is picking up yet another new EGR valve on the chance the other is defective as well as all new gaskets for the elbow and TB. I used to have 5.0L stang and it loved autolight copper plugs so I figured I used them in the explorer, if this new EGR doesn't fix it should I replace all the plugs again w/ motorcrafts??

Can an EGR cause a noticeable miss? While at idle it is fine, when you floor it or give it a bit more gas to go it is fine, its only when at part throttle that it misses? Could I have misadjusted the TPS somehow?

Anyhow any ideas on how to fix this or a possible way to test further would be great. I will let yall know how the new EGR works out.

Thanks!!

B.

If you haven't already done so, I'd replace the wires, although that shouldn't make the CEL come on.

Cleaned the egr tube out and replaced the egr valve w/ a new one. It actually still misses a little but no where near as bad. Oh and I forgot to mention that there is a bad exhaust leak and I think it maybe messing w/ an o2 sensor. So I think I will start there and plug that leak.

You should pull the codes. If the O2 sensor is bad, it should show up in the codes. It may not cause the CEL to come on.

I'll get the codes pulled but I doubt it will find anything. I think this miss will be related to the plugs or an o2 sensor getting too much o2 from the leak.

Hi,
I have (my Wife's) 97 Mountaineer with the 5.0 l. It has been problematice every few years. I think the EGR gets carboned up with the car misses and then it the rich fuel carbs up the EGR. I have replaced the EGR in the past, and that solves the problem, but if missing I would check the wire and their routing. If you get a missing code, I would check that wire and others for sure. My last episode was due to the little clip holding the spark plug wires falling off and landing on the exhaust manifold pipes. They were shorting out to the ground, as the high voltage can jump a small air gap. I added additional wire covers on the spark plug wires and wire tied them so they would not fall down. That was the cause of my 5.0 l missing. I was going to replace with a new one but had problems getting one, so I cleaned the old one and put a new gasket on. It has been 5 days and the engine is running good with not check engine light on!!
