Air Filter Test Results

I posted this as a reply to the "K&N Filter Update" thread.

Maybe I should start a new thread for discussions.

the last couple sentences sums it up. the factory filter is more than adequate at supplying air to the motor at a fixed rpm - cruising speed. My SC runs about 1700 rpm going down the road at 60-65 mph. The factory air filter is cheap, efficient, and well designed for the truck. Any aftermarket high priced filter that claims "extra milage" is bunk. Less restriction might get you more HP if you run the motor at 6000 rpm, but under 2000 rpm and cruising speed, you are wasting your money.

OK...I couldn't resist. So this is what I sent in to K&N Tech. I will post their reply, (if any) back in here.

OK....I have been using K&N Filters for about 6 years now, and just put em in, used em and cleaned am as instructed. But till recently, never paid any attention to performance or mileage differences, if any. And now there is this.....
Any thoughts?

It'll be interesting to see how they will respond to your questions, BillyBob69 - do keep us in the loop.

But I'm almost certain that they will say these test results don't do justice to their products and THEIR own tests will prove that they are right.

I think more air for the engine is a good thing but IMHO more air may help older engines; while all newer engines are computer controlled and the on-board-computer will determine how much air the engine needs so giving it more air may not be beneficial, after all.

Plus, the risk of contaminating the expensive MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor) is not something I'd look forward to.

Just my $0.02.

It seems that everywhere I look, people forget this.

More air in MUST = more air out!

A less restrictive air filter will only be as good as the exhaust system the spent air is asked to exit through. Couple a good filter, with a less restrictive exhaust system and you can throw all those charts and formulas in the garbage.

You must get the air to exit as trouble free as it enters or you are wasting your time an $$. Just my .02

yes, but the volumn of air you can actually use is the motor displacement times the motor speed to get total volumn of air flow thru the motor. if your air cleaner can flow twice that much air, it dont matter, the motor is just like an air compressor. displacement times speed is the TOTAL used.
