Hey,

I just bought this truck and I am going to be using it as a daily driver and to tow "stuff" (anything from quads to a race car to...),
I am just getting rid of all my cars for now, using the truck to get from work and to school (full time work + school = need reliabile transportation) and its about to get a cosmetic lift before sept. when school starts.

Here is the story:

Previous owner tried to restore it (so it seems) but got raked over on stuff he had farm'd out and screwed the odd thing up himself. The interesting thing is my papa (grandfather) worked on this truck in the early 80's because it has been in the same city since new, I am the 4th owner.

Now that that is out of the way, his partial restoration included the following:

rebuilt 302, new carb, rad, pumps, belts etc; (basically everything under hood is new except p/s pump)

restored body (now this is the big joke, bondo everywhere on the doors that is cracking but solid metal underneath!!, new tailgate, new bed sides, new hood, etc

Oh and it has a small hole in the floor and both rockers are looking shady from underneath but dont look THAT BAD from up top.

The window just cracked, the top of dash (dash pad?) is cracked, the seat is original (self explanatory), the carpet is crap, and the safety neutral switch and the signal switch (need new assembly because ford had to be difficult) need to be replaced.

Now the body work is getting done and thats not that big of a deal but here are my following questions:

The seat needs to be replaced its way to soft, does someone no of a good seat that either bolts right in (saw some van seats that bolt in with a console in middle so they use original brackets) or something bucket seat wise that wont require drilling to many holes ;/ I'd prefer a direct bolt in for ease of install and less butchery.

The tailgate doesn't lock and I can't find any replacable handles that lock, anyone have any insight here? Remember this is a daily driver and I am turning the bed into a "trunk"

The dashcover on that site I got the link to from this site seems mighty expensive!! especially since its in US$ and I'm in canada ;/ damn exchange rate...Is their any aftermarket ones that aren't official ford or should I bite the bullet and go with it?

The truck is blue now, might change it black (favourite colour..) what would I need to convert the interior ? Readily available black stuff from that site motorhaven? or is their stuff I cant get that I am overlooking)

The carb is a dinky 2bbl, if I put a 4bbl on is their a limit to how big I can go? Would a 670CFM holley street avenger be good?

And finally last but not least, what is the biggest size tires I can get on this without having to lift it (its 2WD and I think lifting 2WD is a waste of time)

Whoever chooses to answer this (or group of people)

I thank you greatly,
pictures are on the way, I am just a little busy and haven't had time to go out with the digi cam and snap them yet.

First Chad, Let me say Welcome to FTE !

You didn't say where in Canada you are,I also know some Kempt's spelled like yours.

As far as Seats you can go as new as 96's with some mounting changes will bolt right in.

You can always dye or paint the pieces you need doing.

I don't know your application but I would think a 650 would be plenty, Make sure you get a edelbrock performer intake with it

I have LT 255x75-15" truck tires on mine, that's plenty for street application. They provide a smooth ride with tons of traction in the winter.

I can't give specifics on what you need, But here are some tips:
When it comes to parts, check your local autowreckers. Also check Ford dealerships for parts that are old stock. Check auto parts stores - I got a complete bed side from a parts store that had been sitting for 15 years - purchaser never came through with the cash!
As for the Blue, I am parting out a blue one right now.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!
A fellow Canadian!

Sounds like you've got a handle on most of it...

I primed and painted my interior black (was brown). I lightly scuffed it and used rattle cans and painted everything including the dash pad and door panels. It's held up good for over 5 years with small touchups on the armrests. Best part is it only cost about $15.

I just got done puting a '91 seat in mine - huge improvement. Any Ford pickup bench seat will work up to '96. '87-'96 you can find bench seats that feel like buckets and have a fold down armrest. Just remove old seat and swap the slider rails to the new seat and bolt it in.

My '73 F100 2wd has 235/75/15 tires on it now. The next ones I get will be 30x10.5, a couple inches taller and wider. I'm told that a 31" tire will fit too.

Good luck with the project...

Marty

I've been there twice.
1999 & 2000

They have to get rid of the arcades and wax museum.

I'm in Calgary, I thought everybody knew that.
I'll probably be in Toronto later this year, once the heat & smog are gone.

Hey man,

I'm in Woodstock ON. I have a 79 F150 Custom 2wd too. I yanked the 302 shortly after I got the truck, had a 351M for a while, now I have a nice 351W. My paint is still original but in excellent shape for an original Ontario vehicle.

I wouldn't run more than a 600 cfm carb on a 302. The 600 Edelbrock on my 351W seems to be handling it plenty well.

Chado,
You are in Niagra Falls?
Not too far from me - I am about 120 Km's north east of Toronto.
Did I mention I have a BLUE truck for parts - if you are interested.

Hey Dennis how's the weather in Calgary? FYI - Tussand's Wax Museum is gone - replaced by a Rain Forest Cafe. It has really change over the last couple of years - you should see it again sometime soon. Did you drive your truck down?

LoudFords - you are in Ontario too? Gee, this is turning into a Canuck fest here!

Just my Two Cents!

SHHH - Sparky - don't tell everyone! It is the reason that he is comming to Toronto when the days are short and the leaves have :-X12 fallen.

Weldman - didn't mean to forget you! Did you get to any of the shows? Duro is Labour Day week-end I believe. I missed Lindsay river fest's Truck show.

My 77 F150 4X2. I have 31x10.50 15's on the front and 32x11.50 15's on the rear. As for carbs, stay with the 600. You would have to turn about 7700 rpm to actually use 670cfm. The Edelbrock performer intake and carb work well. You could also put in the matching Performer cam kit for even more power.

I'd like to see a picture of your pickup with those tires, do you have one? What size wheels are you running? Do you like the way it drives with those tires?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Aug-02 AT 12:11 PM (EST)]I have a 74 parts truck I picked up in Mississauga that had 30 x 9.50 all around. I had a picture, searching my computer for it right now....otherwise I'll just mount them on the 79 then you can take a look. I'm taking those tires off and polishing the rims then putting a nice set of 275/60/15's on.

....couldn't find picture.....

Dennis, when you come, take your truck. We should have an unofficial old Ford fest for Canucks.
