well then you get stuck with a core charge as it is not rebuildable. they are good but very pricey. i think s&s is the same quailty and much cheaper www.rebuilt-auto-car-engines.com
autozone's long blocks are pretty good. i got a 302/.040 over last august, took the cam out and put a higher lift cam in, and added my acessories. the motor itself was just around $1000. it's a good solid motor. the only thing that went wrong was when i had about 200 miles on it, i decided i would get on it a little, well one of the rocker arms was a little loose and it came off the spring. i just knew i floated a valve or something. i have almost 5000 miles on it now and everything seems to be solid. good luck
There is a guy in PA, don't have it right in front of me, that will sell you any number of 3.0 Vulcans for $500 a piece. Out of Tauri or Sables. Good low mileage engines. I think that you could get one if these and turn it into a Ranger engine with little trouble. I have 225k on my '87 Sable, so considered a swap, but he's in PA and I'm in GA so it would be a long drive...
If you want, I can get the email from a text file somewhere on my computer.

To answer your question in my opinion, the Jasper engines are an excelent reman. and they have a great warranty, that can be serviced at the shop of your choice. The only bad thing I have seen with them is the price. But you get what you pay for.
