I have heard they actually do more harm then good. they trick the tranny into doing things it wasnt built to handle. if you want a shift kit especially for an that tranny get one internally that will beef the tranny in the process.
My E4OD has nearly 100k on it and I don't feel the problem they claim. What I DO wish I could correct is the simultaneous shift to second AND torque convertor lockup. I saw somewhere a switch to allow enable/disabling the lockup but I can't find it now.
How does the lockup work? Is it an electronic clutch or purely mechanical? Can't figure it out in my head. Anyhow, mine is going in for a new torque convertor on friday as the lockup is nackered.
It's electronic. The computer tells it when to lock. Two of the conditions the will unlock it are applying the brake or turning off the cruise control. These actions take the signal to ground which disables the lockup.
