Guys, this is just unbelieveable- regular readers in this forum know I was 'downsized' out of my previous employment- so instead of sitting at home and vegetating I have been helping out my buddy at his machine shop. This afternoon he sends me out to pickup a pair of heads from a customer who complained that he could not get three valves to seal. So I arrive at this alleged repair facility and there this guy is with a stick with a suction cup on it and a jar of paste ! I didn't know you could even buy that stuff anymore ! I have vague memorys from high school (back when engines still had points on them) and the shop teacher said that NOBODY laps valves anymore. And here this guy is in 2001, trying to hand lap some valves in, I was stunned. Now my buddy gets to explain to this alleged service technician that it is not 1931 or 41 or 51, but 2001 and he needs eight new exhaust seats. Wow ! DF
Don't jump too far in your conclusions DF. Just hand-lapped the valves in my 48 F1's flathead V8 last year. Suction cup on a stick, tub of valve grinding compound and a lot of elbow grease. Some of us keep these 'ancient' practices current on purpose. Drives me crazy sometimes to live in this 'unplug/throw away/plug in a new part' society. Took the truck apart piece by piece - down to the frame and replaced/rebuilt everything worn. Hope to be on the road with it in a couple of weeks. Now you know I'm crazy, huh! By the way, the 'Twilight Zone' was a pretty cool TV show, too!
