OK I am 16 and I have a F-150 ( can't remember if it's an 89 or 90) but neway. I was sitting at the stop light and I was pushing really hard on the brake pedal with the side of my foor cuz I saw streching out my ankle....then it went limp.......it just made this hissing sound and it fell to the floor. it still brakes almost like normal even, just that it's like real muchy and close to the floor........my dad is lazy and wont look at it..any Ideas?? I thought maybe it needs to be bled?...
Mine did the same thing. I had a rusted brake line and it was leaking. That is easy to find - look for a puddle.
You might check the brake fluid level - bleed the brakes - test the master cylinder.
First look for leaks. Good luck.

Is the fluid level in the master cylinder staying up? Are there any wet spots around the base of it where it mates to the booster? Check the vacuum hose for air leaks also.
you said you heard a "hissing" sound. do you hear the hissing all the time when you are driving around? and then when you step on the brake it goes away? if so i think it would be a hole in the brake booster diaphram. this is what happened to my bronco II when i first got it.
maybe not . it depends on when wou hear the hissing sound. if the booster goes out the brakes wouldnt be mushy the would be too hard. i think the hissing sound is brake fluid squirting out from a leak some where. any way this thread should be in the right forum this is for general conversation, go to the 80 - 96 forum you will get all the help you need

Try this !
With the engine shut off pump and hold the pedal for at least two minutes, If the pedal sinks to the floor slowly it's the master cylinder (and needs replacing)
If it sinks quickly there is a leak in the brake fluid system.
if the pedal doesn't sink at all, It's the Vacuum booster.
To confirm this:
Pump up the brake pedal and hold ,Now sstart the truck up with your foot on the pedal. If the peadl sinks there is a leak in the vacuum booster system.
Expensive fix $$$$
Keep your fingers crossed X
Hope this helps .

If you're not experienced, take it to a brake shop. Brake repairs should not be done by unless you're confident in your ability to handle them. Its your life you're talking about....
