For all you guys wondering what kind of milage you should be getting out of your ranger 3.0, HEAR THIS!
I recently put new FACTORY RECOMMENDED TIRES on my 99 Ranger 4X4, 5 Sp. I took off the tailgate, and did a 250 mile run. Mostly hyway. I refilled when I got back and averaged 28.75 MPG. I admit I drove like an old lady. Trying to keep the RPM no higher than 2500. My truck also has 106,000 miles on it.
Actually, taking your tailgate off makes you less aerodynamic, effectively decreasing your mileage. A tonneau cover is ideal, actually. What happens is the air comes over your roof and then down, curls around inside the bed, and acts as a solid. After that, much of the air coming off the roof actually blows right by the "solid" air in the back (think fluid mechanics!) making your vehicle more aerodynamic. Hard to explain without a diagram, but trust me... anyone who has studied fluid mechanics knows this. The only economy gains you might have would have to be due to weight reduction...
28.75 i believe is possible, especially all highway grandma type driving.
My best is about 24-25.. but i always do some city... and tend to be a little aggressive. (2000 mazda b3000 5 spd)
Also remember a one time check isn't always accurate... some pumps are more sensitive than others as to when they "kick off" so you could be 1/2 to 1 gallon low on fuel... the best way is to average out 3 or 4 fill ups to determine actual mileage.
I just bought an 05 Edge with auto trans and a 3.0. So far I have 1200 miles on the truck and I get only 18 miles to the gallon. 95% of all my driving is highway at speeds of about 65 mph. Any ideas on if this will improve over time as things break in?
I don't know how much yours will improve, but I'm hoping a lot, as I too just bought an 05 Edge! I have a Manual Tranny and a 3.0. I just got about 21.8 MPG on my last tank, about 98% hwy. I've gotten as low as about 16.5 which seems low. I'm at about 4,000 miles, so it should be about broken in.
Edge that sounds about right. You'll probably notice a 3 or 4 mpg increase in the next 10,000 miles or so, but you won't see more than 21 or 22 mpg total, especially if it is 4wd
