Oil filter bung removal???

Can anyone tell me what would be the easiest (or only) way to remove the fitting that goes between the oil filter and the block? I know it unscrews but that bad boy is really in there!!! Thanks.

I've only removed a couple, but they didn't give me too much of a fight. Why are you removing it? Is the engine in the vehicle, or out? I would suggest a 6-point socket with a breaker bar if it's in, and an impact wrench if it's out and you can get to it easier.

Hi, I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing.....when you take the oil filter off there is a threaded pipe end that the filter screws onto...that threaded pipe piece in turn threads into the block via a larger pipe thread end, there is no hex shoulder or anything else to grab a hold of with a socket. The reason I'm taking it out is that the threads for the oil filter got munched when the block was in transit and I need to know how to take a donor one out for it. Thanks.

Yes, it's called the oil filter adapter. Some are threaded in with a hex, and some, like yours apparently do no not have the hex. I just looked at a rusty '78 302 block I have that's sitting out back and lo and behold, the adapter has no hex. Sorry, never messed with one of those.

First of all, just how bad is it? Can you clean up the threads with a thread file, or is it crushed badly enough to be out of round? If you're positive it's threaded in and not cast or pressed in (mine is so rusty, I can't tell) perhaps you can use a large EZ-out inside the thing.

Thanks for the response...I didn't realize some had hex shoulder, that would simplify things greatly! I can take mine out with a pipe wrench or vice grips (threads are not fixable I think) I was more curious how to get a donor one out without wrecking the threads. I will now look for one with a hex type at the wreckers. Appreciate all your help.
