Here in Colorado I just paid $3.26 at the King Soopers. I still don't understand why diesel is going up and up. Just isn't right. Growing up diesel was always cheaper at the pump and cheaper to make. I really wish I knew what was going on.

That's about what it is here too, but gas keeps going down. We're being had.

Central Illinois gas is 2.39 and Diesel is 3.60. If my math is correct those towel headed sand ******s are charging us 1.20 more per gallon for something that is made from the same oil as gas and is a byproduct of gas. It all makes perfect sense doesnt it? If all those truck drivers would get smart they would stop their trucks for 1 hour at the same time and the economy would stop for 1 hour. Then we will see who gets fussy over it.

Home heating oil and diesel are both petroleum distillates. Home heating oil appears to be cheaper than both diesel and gas but it's not taxed the same.
I'm just speculating but a look at the market futures shows distillate is trading on a lower level than gasoline and the futures price is dropping so the seasonal increase in the use of home heating oil as people fill their tanks for the winter may be creating a demand that suppliers are capitalizing on to drive diesel prices artificially higher.
I'm still just speculating but it's been my observation that supply and demand in election years can be more of a political tool than a reality of market conditions. The news reports of lower income residential users not being able to heat their homes generates a lot more political accountability than trucks paying more at the pump. If the trucks stopped rolling due to a shortage of supply the political agenda would swing and prices would come done. Big oil can be expected to produce enough diesel for the market to ensure that doesn't happen while making sure they don't produce so much that it generates a surplus. Maybe when the refineries shut down by the huricane season come back on line a stockpile will build up to bring diesel prices down. The trading in oil futures indicates that will happen but until then diesel prices will keep going up as oil profits keep increasing.
This topic really gets me riled up. If Venezuela can protect it's citizens and sell gas at less than $.20 a gal what's wrong in the U.S. that diesel users are being gouged at the pump and can't be treated fairly with prices that reflect equal profits on all petroleum fuels?

Has anyone besides me noticed that when there are news reports that the price of a barrel of oil is going up it seems the price will increase $.10 a gal or more at the pumps the next day but when the news reports are that the price/ barrel is going down it seems to take 6 months for the price at the pump to come down?

That's exactly right, they have no problem with jumping up 5 or 10 cents at a time, but when it goes down it only goes down in 1 to 2 cent increments.

here in ruidoso, nm the diesel costs 3.39 to 3.45 per gallon. gas is a little cheaper. i bought fuel this week in alamagordo for 3.05. i don't like to pay these prices, but you have to admit a lot of our driving is unnecessary. these prices are making me change my habits and that is a good thing. i will definately consider fuel milage in my next vehicle purchase.

You know, reading this post sparked a few childhood memories. My father is a retired owner operator, he took me to the truckers strike at the capital, must have been around 1977?, I was 7 at the time and don't remember exactly why we were there, think it was permit tax or something, anyway, it was a bunch of drivers saying "WTF, we aren't gonna take this!".
Too bad we couldn't coordinate something like that again, except doing it nationally for a week, see who starts cryin' then.

MWK, please don't hold out any hope of truckers and consumers ever organizing to put pressure on the oil companies. it ain't ever going to happen. about the only thing we can do as individuals is to conserve and use our fuel more effectively. fuels prices will remain high from now on. i expect within another 25 years diesel and gas vehicles will be museum pieces. lol
