Rather than stashing water, you might try to carry a water purifier, they will usually process around 1000 gallons before the filter is plugged.
I keep my pistols well stocked, if I had to make home a fort I could. My backpack will suffice to get me in the woods, and I could throw enough stuff in my truck to get me pretty close to staying there indefinetly.
I think a major blizzard would be difficult for me to handle. I wouldn't be able to handle a nuclear strike. Everything else is fair game.
You can distill water by placing an inch or two in a deep pot. Tie a tea cup or glass measuring cup to the lids handle so its suspended when the lid is upside down. Put the lid on the pot upside down. Put pot on camp stove and bring to a simmer. You can also use other heat surfaces such as the roof of a vehicle. If you are in a flood area I recommend buying a hatchet (Axes are too long to get a good swing in most attics) and flat crowbar, and keeping them in the attic at all times, so you can cut thru the roof to get out of the attic. Might even want to build a platform in the attic where you will cut thru.

Good idea. I wonder how many people in N.O. didn't think of that and are now floating in their attics? Make's you wonder.
Maybe even put important info on a dvd or cd disc.

Done that a long time ago, put the CD's in the gunsafe where it is virtually fireproof.
I did this in case of fire more than in case of a natural disaster.
Sound's like your' ready for anything. Pity the poor fool who tries to **** with you, eh!? Don't forget a good hunting knife, or several. I like the Bowie style myself.

I am ready for anything. The only clothing I packed is my camo, who needs the suits and ties when the poopies are flying?
I have a belt that has a zipper liner to it, guess where a nice supply of cash is stored? How many robbers wodl think to try to take a guys belt? Catch my drift, plus if he wants my belt, guess where pistol #2 is?
It ain't the natural disaster I am worried about, I am not in danger of flood, tornado and snow/ice or earthquake yes but that is not near as what I am feearful of as to what the human disaster could be, hence lots of things that go boom and LOTS of AMMO!
Just wait until they drain all of that water and see what they'll find in terms of bodies.
It's not going to be a pretty site.
They probably didn't plan the attic thing because N.O. never had flood waters nearly that high.
Either way it's a tragedy all the way around.
Another aspect to getting prepared is not to get too attached to material things.
How many times do you see people being evacuated, loading their vehicles with crap they don't need, like TVs or a stereo.
I would think that I would be loading survival stuff and maybe important papers, pics, jewerly, small important stuff.
Maybe even put important info on a dvd or cd disc.

Just this afternoon I heard that 45,000 people are unaccounted for in N.O. I hope they are wrong about that number.
Your' so right about people getting attached to material things. You can replace "things" but you can't replace your family or yourself. My attitude is that if you have enough time, load your truck with food, water, warm clothes and your family and get the hell to safety! If you don't have the time then it's just the family. Leave material posessions behind. Human life is the ONLY thing worth saving when it comes down to it.
If I heard a flood was coming my way I'd gladly leave my stereo, computer and everything else behind. It would give me the excuse to buy new stuff. In my glove compartment I have a tiny Altoids tin full of all the survival gear I would need. I have the know-how to survive without anything but it would make things a bit easier.
It's a shame people put more value on their 'stuff' than they do on their lives.
