I won't really have to worry too much about a flood, I'm on high ground and the area where I live is high ground too. If floods ever reach where I live there won't be an internet to post on let's say that.
Around here it's tornado and earthuake worries. We've had a few tornado's, nothing like an f4 or f5 but in 1925 the worst tornado in US history pretty much tookout this town. We'bve had a few minor ones or touchdown twisters since I've been alive.
Earthquakes, we have had a few minor tremors barely even felt but there was activity. The New Madrid fault runs near (50 miles) where I live, in the early 1800's it had a strong enough quake to cause the Mississippi River to run backwards and later change it's course forever.
Of course there is always the possibility of an ice and/or snowstorm too, I would much rather deal with the ice and snow than the tornado or earthquake.
Anyone remember the Niven and Pournelle 70s book on a comet breakup hitting Earth and surviving it? It was called "Lucifer's Hammer". Pretty good really and they did some homework too in all areas.
Of course this was scifi....until we saw this happen in 1994 with Schumaker-Levy "string of pearls" hitting Jupiter.
i think we are fairly protected right now with our atmosphere the way it is, they said that most off the big meteors come in and get blown to bitts before they hit us so it turns into gettting hit with a 12 guage awith squirrel shot than with a solid nose 50 cal, which is a lot better. i seen a show on it, and its been a REALLy lond time since anything big has done any harm to us, except the one in russia where it took them a really long time to get to it, it was in such a desolate place.
After reading about the looting and general chaos down yonder, I'd say guns are at the top of my list.
Food, water, etc. we have. We can hunt with the guns, and we can shoot bad people with the guns.
I might get flamed, but I'd say it's time to declare martial law in N.O. and send in a few Apache gunships to escort the evac vehicles. Reports say the evac choppers are being fired upon by people on the ground, and paramedics are afraid to go into some areas because of armed mobs.
The mob mentality in N.O. is exactly what I am afraid of. Mother nature I can deal with, it's bad human behavior I can't deal with. I'm more afraid of the power going out in a big city for long periods of time than almost anything else. I carried a rifle to and from work when I was in the big city just in case the power went out from bad actors. Imagine the gridlock and angry people if power went out. N.O. seems to prove my theory right about no power and angry mobs. I was pretty tickled to read a story about a man who was approached by 4 armed kids demanding his generator and he simply fired 2 shots from his 357 and they scattered.
Just thought about it and realized my raft is also ready to go in my garage, paddles along side it. Of course at 2200 feet and being at the top of the hill in this city I don't think I'll have to worry about it any time too soon.
