I hane a 99 sd that just stalled a block from the house. I mean like the key was switched off/on/off/on then off. I coasted for a bit then tried to start. She popped right off but then shut down. The second time she started and got us home. Earlier in the day I noticed my speedometer was not working but everything else was. Then at some point it started working. Could all this be a short inthe key switch???
Iv'e never had a problem w/ this truck running. I 'm glad I was not pulling a load like I was headed to do.
Ideas??
Thanks

Are you sure the speedo stopped and not the tach. It sounds like the typical CPS going bad. There are many, many posts on here about the CPS (cam position sensor). They are famous for going bad on these trucks. Ford gets something like $210, International gets like $85, or there are usually some on ebay for $60-$80 (new in package). I'm sure others will chime in as well.
A couple of days ago mine was stalling to, followed the advice on here bought a CPS from international (about $100 with tax). No more issues. It stalled on me about 4 times I just kept limping it. My gauges seemed to work cant remember. You may want to try and get the codes read, but mine did not throw a code.
How much work is it to change a CPS. I did everything to my old International but havn't learned squat about the (New) 7.3 turbo. Hell they hid the injectors!!!
I've had it 4 years and haven't had to do anything......It's been nice. W/ 141191 miles, is it beginng to show it's age???..I can hardly hit a bad dog w/ a rock anymore!
Thanks

The CPS is easier to replace than changing your oil. Roll under the truck and look up at the crankshaft pulley. You will see a sensor with an electrical plug mounted in the block at about the 10:00 o'clock position in relation to the crankshaft pulley. It's held in with a single bolt with a 10mm head on it. Remove the plug, remove the bolt, and work the sensor out of it's hole. Clean the dirt from around the hole, put some lube on the o-ring for the new one and reinstall.
I saw it looking down from the top. What kind of sensor is it? A riding momentary contact button, light......Can it be serviced????
And what does it do??? Obviously it moniters the position of the cam But all my other diesels run fine w/o one. Is This the brain child behind hight technology. The time honnored basic for all diesels is compression, fuel, air. Now they added a $100 widget.
Thanks

Since the PSD does not have an injection pump, the ECU must have information about engine position so it knows when to command the injectors to fire and in what cylinder. The CPS sends signals to the ECU for that purpose.
No they cannot be serviced.
Well i change the cps, 500ft from the house it stopped. this time there was no gettin it going again. I called a guy who had me call a guy who said there were two things left.
The IPR which he said might work after it cooled off. I just got back w/ a loaner truck and it did fire up.
Or a bad oil pump to which I have to ask... if the injectors a controled by the oil psi, then cranking revs alone are enough to pressurize the system to crank initialy??
I also started looking at the two soliniods behind the f.filter and one(in back) was rather hot. I thought there might be a shut off solinoid like on my boat.. that was operating incorrectly.
Ideas?? and where might I find a Darn good book on this engine?
thanks

Well, if its the IPR o-ring it won't quit while its running but it won't start while its hot.
If it was a bad hpop (high pressure oil pump) the truck wouldn't run at all.
Have you checked your fuel filter? Make sure its clean and that there is fuel in the bowl. If the truck is running and suddenly quits, then shut the key off, pull the lid on the fuel bowl and make sure its full. Might be a bad fuel pump.

I'd check that hot solenoid for sure. Alot of things get warm.....but where the solenoids are located........I don't think hot would be normal.
Going on the description of how your engine failed, I would look into electrical failures, not lack of fuel. Lack of fuel will give a gradual "tapering off" effect and then quit. Whereas yours was go/no go. Nothing in between. That's electrical failure of some sort. Not sure where to point you beyond that.
