My 97 4x4 CC F-350 seemed to be down on power yesterday. Had a load of logs on my trailer, total weight, including truck was 18,500, weighed it at truckstop. Will a weak Hi Pressure Pump cause a loss in power. I had to drop two gears to pull one hill approx 6% grade in SE MO.
Injectors were new 6000 miles back. Turbo sounds the same...Filter is 100% on gauge. Use Motocraft Oil w/Motorcraft Filter. Fuel filter has less than 4000 miles on it. Oil brand new. Engine does not use a drop of oil between changes. It has 260,000 on it. Mileage has not changed. hovers around 16-17 mpg with a peak of 17.2 on wednesday.
The truck is 10,500 all the time. It has not seemed to lack power until yesterday. Normally I can accelerate at will up most grades in 5th with the 10,500 weight.
Maybe I am expecting too much. Could the Injector Pressure sensor cause this also?
That's a fair amount of weight. When I pull my trailer I gross out at 23k. I have stock fuel programming and 4.88 axle. I too would have to shift down twice to maintain speed on a 6% grade. That's a pretty good pull with 18k and 4.10s
Have you pulled at the 18K before or was this the first time. If the first time then with an additional 4 tons behind you, it will make a lot of difference in how it pulls. especially on those long 6% pulls.
Yea thats alot of weight, I pull the S250 bobcat at work, GCVW is 18K with me, I won't have to down shift cuz of the PCM, but when it was "stock" it sucked, no beans at all. your HPOP could be getting weak, but it was most likely the weight of the whole thing that slowed you down.
What is the pressure range on the HPOP Rail in the head? I may put a gauge on the rail and watch the pressure.
This was my first time at this weight. I intend to make a few more trips and actually want to put on about 6000 more. That was just 1 & 1/2 rows of 12" logs on the trailer. Room for a lot more.
Pulling a lot of weight was an eye opener for me too. It's like taking an ocean voyage. The sea has no forgivness if you screw up. Same with a lot of weight.
18k on a 6% grade will cause an apparent loss of power every time; power than mysteriously reappears when the climb is done. I get the same feeling when pulling a decent-sized RV. Great pull on the flats & bumps, but a sudden & severe lack on a fair hill. When the load's lighter, the fair hills are unnoticable (well, the EGT & boots shows the change, but the truck doesn't care).
Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your mule.
The pressure in the hpo rails as high as 3000psi!!! You would want to have one heck of a gauge. A snap-on scanner can read it in the cab and it is much safer!!

If your "stock" then I would bet your not gunna get to far over 2,500 psi.
You will get a Check Engine Light @ 1800 psi and somwhere around 45-48% IPC range.
so..... if you can't get into the 2K-2.5K range, @ WOT, full load. then your Hpop is getting weak. but I wouldn't worry about it until you start getting CEL's. its as low as 700 psi at idle.
I made a gauge, but the hose is to short, and I have to take the hood off to run it. P.I.T.A. so I just use it for diagnosing No starts, poor idleing and stuff where I dont have to move.
Went to Napa, looked through the gauge book, found a liquid filled, 5K gauge, and had them make me a hose with a #5 O-ringed fitting on one end, I brought a plug with to make sure it matched also, and a NPT fitting to match the gauge on the other. its Hydralic hose, 2500 working pressure like 4K burst pressure.
