hey there im new to replacing some of this stuff and i was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a 69 ford f-100 with the gas tank behind the seat. I just picked up a new fuel sending unit(adjustable). I was wondering if anyone had the dimensions of the tank (depth and length) so i could set it up, if not i can always measure it. My other question is i was wondering if i can remove the old sending unit and swap the new one in with fuel still in the tank?.....might be a dumb question but where im at it would be a big hassle pulling the tank and draining the fuel. I am stationed on a naval base and live in the barracks. If anyone could give me some pointers i would appericiate it. THANKS A LOT..........Ryan
Sorry, don't have the actual dimensions of tank. WIth it right behind the seat, a simple quick measurement with a tape will get you pretty close. As for removing the sending unit...it matters not if any fuel is in tank. The sending unit is right behind driver and is at top of tank so pulling it is really easy and will not spill a drop.
I would pull old, set up next to new adjustable one and make it match. Then install new one. It should be about perfect then!
ok well i got the old out and i hooked up the new sending unit up but with no luck it will go halfway up the fuel guage then stop. i have the sending unit out of the tank and am pushing the float all the way up. if ground the positive wire out the guage will go all the way full, so i know my guage can go past half. I have no idea what im doing wrong or what else it might be? any ideas?
The ohm parameters might not be the same between the gauge and the sending unit. The sending unit is still available from Ford for around $80, I think.

> if ground the positive wire out the guage will go all the way full
FWIW: There usually is no "positive" wire on a fuel guage sending unit because you would not want a spark inside a vapor filled gas tank. So, do not go and stick a positive lead to any wire on that guage or BOOM could result.
Basically, the fuel guage measures how much "ground" there is in the wire. The Fords start at something around 33 ohms, after market senders start at 0 ohms. You probably need a Ford sender or a universal gas guage.
i have found a fuel sending unit on jc whitney with 78-10 ohm resi i was wondering if anyone might know what they came stock with to see if that might work if not ill order it from ford tommorrow. Thanks once again all.
no there fine....lol just my fuel its always on empty i am pretty sure its my sending unit. Just need to find out what if the one of jc whitney will getter done or if i need to oreder from ford. Plus i tried using another cluster i have that i got from the junk yard still no go. I was wondering about the metal piece thats on a clip on the back of ur gauges. It has a black/green wire running to it cant think of the other color off the top of my head, think its orange, have to go look for you all. Its right underneath you blinker fuse. What does that do by?.... if anyone has any idea what im talking about...... i will go take another look and have a better discription. thanks
oldbad69,Just finished fixing my fuel gauge.Have a extra sending unit in good shape. Its out of a 70 f-100.Let me know if your intrested. You should be getting a pulsating voltage thru your sender wire.Mine would start out at 0.1 and 0.2,0.3,0.4,0.5 then start all over again. If this isnt happening the problem is the box on the back of the fuel gauge.Plugs in like a square 9 volt battery. moparnut
