I did the power steering conversion on my 68 f-100 about a year ago. Everything works fine but the belt squeals when I start it up, it does occasionally when I am turning as well. I didn't drive it for a couple of weeks and the noise was real bad when I started it up and kept on going for a while after it warmed up. Any thoughts? I have tried different belts and it looks like the alignment on the pulleys is good as far as I can see with the naked eye.
Also, I have the amber turn signal lights on the hood and one burned out. Can you change the light out or do you have to replace the whole thing? I took it apart and couldn't see any way to get the bulb out but it was getting late.
Fianlly, any advice on a good machine shop in the Denver area? I am starting to plan the FE rebuild
JD, My guess is the pump is hard to turn. After saying that, I am not sure of the cause. Hopefully another reader can help.
Look at the back side of the light where the wires go in, it should be a white plastic flat piece. Grab the oiece turn it counter clockwise and the bulb should become exposed foe replacement. I think it is a pull out.
If you are gonna build a FE, build a 390, you'll be happier with the extra power, no extra cost.
check the pulley with the belt off & the pump cold, it should spin freely. Is the pulley painted? If so you might scuff up the paint a bit to let the belt "grab".
Thanks for the replies, the pulley is painted I will give that a shot. I was planning on going to 390 with the 360, I just need a good shop near Denver CO. to do the machining and rebuild the heads.
If you're looking for a GOOD shop that really knows Fords and especially the FE motor...
I say Rob McQuarie at Blue Oval Performance in Englewood. He knows his stuff, but is not cheap.

Spudco
like the saying goes...speed cost money, how fast you wanna go??
Last 390 i did would put your head to the back glass @ 60 mph
never did add up what i had in that one....................
Cool I live in Englewood, I will check it out. My plan is to have a pretty good budget when the time comes but you know how that goes. I saw a 425 hp 390 turn key crate motor online for just over 5 grand. I figure for less than that I should be able to make my friends spill their drinks when I step on it
It would be very easy to get half again that much power for that amount of money- twin turbos, EFI, and alcohol/water injection to keep temps down. The problem would be in finding the traction to handle that power in a truck.
Honestly I am just looking for good overall power, reliability, low maintenance, and something that will run on pump gas. The 360 is original 122,000 miles and was my dads daily driver before he passed away. Because of that I want to stay with the original block, crank, and bare heads to keep it mostly orginal. Fun to drive and ability to burn rubber every now and then are important as well.
I have done some back yard rebuilds but want to get a professionally built block and heads because I do not have the experience with performance rebuilds and what combinations of rods, pistons, cams, etc. I have been reading the FE forum but don't trust myself with certain things. That might change if I keep reading though. If I can get anywhere near 400 hp I will be happy.
