Bluetooth's reply has still got me wondering. He has a 29 gal tanke and gets about the same in as me when on "E". I've only let it get that low 2 times and the last time was just double checking after I began wondering when I only got about 30 gal in. JackofallTrades got 34 in his when it read 1/8. Mine was closer to E than that.
Still uncertain. Dealer says not to worry but there must be some releatively easy way to check
I know that when I fill up, it takes me 10 minutes or so of "topping off" to get past the foaming of the fuel. It usually shuts off at 28-29 gallons, but if I'm patient I can get almost 5 more gallons in the tank by waiting for the foam to go down and slowly pumping more in.
I top off my truck til I see fuel in the filler neck and know for sure that the 29er will take 29.5 gal when completely topped off and run toooooo low. I messed up and won't do that again. The fuel light came on and an alarm beeps when the lie-o-meter gets to 50 MTE and again at 25 MTE. A new record $71.15 fillup. Averaged 16.032 MPG in mixed offroad, highway and city driving. Its gettin better as prices get worse! Wish I had the Long Bed!
I read some where that Ford did this on purpose so that you would'nt run out of fuel. Apperently when you get really low the engine starts to surge and hesitate as a way to protect the injectors and scare drivers into the pumps. Mine start hesitating and when I fill up there's still 20 litres left.
No its not like that... I have worked for or on the site of most all auto companys and that includes the jappanese. This type of mistake, (if that is the problem) is not common but can happen at any plant that runs more than one type of platform. Cars get cut out and then cut back in to rotation all the time. If all the parts do not get cut out and cut back in at the same time it happens. The good thing is that most do not get out the door. I do not even know if it is posable to put a 29 on a long bed but if it is and a short bed was cut out befor the tank instal this may happen. I have seen stuf like this get off the line but I can only think of a couple that made it past inspection.
For what it's worth, I have an 06 with 2000 miles, and it does the same exact thing. fuel light comes on, only took 29 gallons to top it off, not quite sure what the deal is. I am sure it is the right tank, just come computer setting. It's really not a big deal for me, I need to stop that often to use the restroom anyway.
I ran my 03 short bed CC down to 10 miles on the overhead, the gauge was touching empty. I got 30.5gals in it without topping off. I can only guess, but I'll say it was close to empty. I have since found out I can get another 1 gallon or more by slowly topping off. that filler neck must hold a lot of fuel, or it just takes a while to get the air out without the harpoon mod.
With the XLT package I do not have an overhead computer. As one who has "harpooned" my tank I can tell you that (on the 03's anyway) there is no sump for the fuel pump pickup. What I removed from the tank to do the mod was a sender unit for the guage, and the pickup for fuel (a 3" dia disk w/ screen on the bottom). The fuel pump is in the HFCM below the driver's side seat (along w/ water seperator & primary fuel filter/heater). When I harpooned, I was down to the E mark, and had about 4" of fuel left in the tank. With the weight of the tank when I dropped it, I would estimate about 6 gallons.
I have several times run my 38g tank to below empty & shown over 700miles on the trip OD. I can consistantly show trips of over 650. The most I have ever put back in w/ fuel visiable in the filler neck is 38.8g. I have no way of proving it, but I would guess between 2 & 3 gallons left at that point. I have never run out of fuel, and never had the truck sputter, hesitate, or cough.
Over at TDS, someone took their new 05 into the dealer for a CEL, and the dealer told him it had been "overfilled". We got into to it a bit, and its my thought that Ford has now changed the programing on the newer truck to keep people from "topping off". They use the same tank as a gasser, and gas volitizes while diesel does not. That's why we can harpoon the tanks.
The most I have been able to get out of my 01 7.3 Long bed 4X4 when it was stock is 749 Miles. I had a 5 Gal. jug in the back full because I wanted to see just how many miles I could get out of a tank. It ran out and I coasted up to the pump at a shell station I go to when I hunt. I put 42.8 gallons in then, filled to the top of the neck.
On my 05 6.0 Long bed 4X4 the Alarm and low fuel light comes on at 567 miles and starts bucking and missing at 617. I drove it straight to the pump and I could only put 33 gallons in it!! It did this one time while it showed over ¾ of a tank. I’m not real happy about this.
I have a 04 short bed with the 29 gallon tank. We have run it well below E without any surging at all. When its this low, I can put a bit over 34 gallons in it (fuel up the cap ). Takes a bit to fill up that high, since I haven't had time to harpoon the tank yet.
