Hi everyone. New to the forum and wonder if anyone else has my problem. I've got an '05 F350 drw, 4x4 ,long box, cc ,diesel, 8500 mi. The low fuel warning came on and when I filled it up it only took 29.5 gal. This seemed strange to me since it is suppose to be a 38 gal tank. Ran it almost empty again. Low fuel was on and said i only had 25 miles to empty. Filled it up very slowly and could see diesel fuel in spout but it only took 30.1 gal. Called the dealer and asked if they could have put the wrong size tank in and he said that there is a cavity int the tank where the fuel pump sits and it could very well hold around 8 gal in the cavity. Said that if I ran it that low it would be sputtering and so forth. Is this right. Does anyone else put more in when they fill up or is the dealer just bs..ing me????
I've noticed this on many Ford gauges. I think they bias them so that you won't ever run out.
I've run mine 100 miles past when the low fuel light came on and I still had 6 gallons in the tank. I don't have a trip computer so I don't have miles to empty.

They must have fixed that because of the past. I used to run out of gas all the time on old fords 'E' REALLY meant EMPTY.

I agree i have run mine til the gauge hit the bottom of the E on gage cluster and i still had 4 gallons when i got to the pump

Remember that a fuel guage is just an estimate and so is the overhead digital meter. I am sure your tank is OK. However... here is a Ford TSB that may be relevant and solve your problem...
05 F-Series/Excursion Inaccurate Fuel Level on Low Mileage Trucks:
Some trucks may have an inaccurate fuel level indicated by the gauge at low miles. This may be due to being transported to the dealership at an angle. It may take driving for up to half a tank of fuel to correct. The gauge may self correct if the batteries are disconnected for a minute, then reconnected, or leaving the key on (engine off) for 15 minutes with the truck parked on a level surface. Thanks for everyones help.I didn't realize I posted to the wrong forum. Sorry
No problem and you did nothing wrong.
Continue to enjoy and use this site and ask away.

Reason: Lately, the Mods have closed and moved non 6.0L threads and several of us are having fun with them on how absurd this "heavy-handed" moderation has become of late.
Now that there's been a possible fix for this issue. As an example of what I consider a properly operating fuel tank indicating system, my low fuel light comes on when about 34 gallons of fuel have been removed from my 38 gallon tank. The gauge indicates just at 1/8. I figure "E" is "E". Does it actually hold 38 gallons? I'm too chicken to find out!
What about the "shorten up the vent tube mod" I read about? Something about shortening up the fuel tank vent tube to allow faster and more complete fill-ups.
Perhaps you are not getting a complete fill-up of the fuel tank. Just a thought.
I have the 29 gal tank and I can get about 30 in it if its real low. If you got 8500 miles on the tuck has it allway ben this way? If so It sounds like you got the small tank. I am sure a visual inspection is all that is needed by your dealer.
man I work at ford and I have seen some stuff come off the line that you would not believe. 17" crome weels on one side of a car and 16" alum on the other. Most of this stuff gets caught befor the car is shiped but it happens. The tucks come down the line in a rotation ( one long box 2 short boxes one long box 3 short boxes ect...) if somting gets out of rotation it can happen. I dont know if it is posable to instal a small tank on a long box but if it is I could see it getting by.
