lower radiator hose

I have a '79 F250 4x4 with a 460. I need to replace the lower radiator hose and went to my local Ford dealer with the old one in hand. The numbers were still readable and Mr PartsMan says it's a discontinued item. He says try parts stores. Well they can't find a listing for this motor/truck combonation and it must be a trial and fit thing. He couldn't even cross reference the Motorcraft number. What gives? Anybody else have this problem? Do you have a number that I can use for a Gates or other name brand hose? I tried looking thru the various suppliers and they don't handle radiator hoses.

I would tell the parts store your truck is a two wheel drive with a 460. Ford never put a 460 in a 4x4,It should fit.

Yep, the 2wd hose fits in a 4x4. You may have to trim it a little, but it works fine.

Thanks. I did go to a different parts store after the post and they have one ordered for me. Apparently some parts stores try alittle harder than others.

Seems ironic that the one that was in the truck had 3 or 4 bends in it and the replacement was just L shaped. It worked but it awful close to PS belt. Not touching but very near to touching. And yup I will be changing parts houses even thou I like going to the Ford dealer for most of my stuff. Gives me a chance to drool on the new stuff.

My 76 2wd 460 F150 has its lower hose close to the belt also. I replaced the rad, and when I put the hose back on, I rotated it enough to give about an inch of clearance.

Several parts stores have web sites. Some even display images of the parts. On hoses hey give the inlet/outlet/length size. Sometimes various brand/price options. One site that I've used even has a part number cross reference. Since I'm changing to a later model radiator and my inlet is being changed to the oposite side, I've searched for a later model hose. I have several candidates to choose from, just haven't been to the store to pick one up yet. Hope this helps

OOhh, sounds familiar. I just finished installing mine in my 79 crew 4x4 with 460. Anyway, I will go out to the garage and get the part number as soon my wife gets back to watch the wee ones.

Here is the number. I believe the Gates 21048 is the right one. I took the tags off of 2 different hoses and forgot which is which.

The one that works perfectly has a slight curve back right after the water pump outlet. Thus missing the p.s. belt by a good 1/2 inch. Also, it misses the front crossmember. It actually just touched, but I trimmed about 1/4 inch off the end that goes into the water pump. I have no idea what this hose is actually for, but it works perfect. You will be able to tell right a way when you see it. Way better than the original. Dont get what the auto stores say, they dont work worth squat.

Kevin

F150 and F250 do have some differences. The 2wd one I got would hit the F250 crossmember and cause it to distort forcing it out a bit to just rub the belt. That is probably why it works good on the F150.
