well, you get the news to cover that. people cleanin up isnt somthing that catches peoples eye to much, unless its special people, or kids. it would be nice to have them cover things like that, but it doesnt happen enough for people to notice.

It's funny that you mentioned "special people' and the title of this thread is "retards". I got a good chuckle out of that!

In order to get media coverage, you have to go out and seek it. Just tell them someone famous is gonna be there, or call that one crazy news guy that never really covers news stories but just goes around and messes with people in the mornings. Every station has one, in San Diego his name is Rod Luck, and he is less a reporter and more of an idiot than most. But he will cover just about anything you throw at him.
Or do what we did when I lived in Dallas. We were doing a clean-up/maintainance day, clearing some trails on city owned, public property and decided to do a controlled burn to get rid of the retrograde (yes, we had permits and a FD rep on site). Anyway, lot's of smoke and the news crews came by the dozens, and we got some impromtu publicity for our efforts. Only a few stations aired anything at all about it, and the stories were about how a volunteer group caused false fire alarms due to our controlled burn, not that we were volunteering to clear out some public use trails that the city just didn't have the funds or desire to do themselves. The only false alarms were at the news stations, because they didn't get a doom and gloom or disaster story like they had hoped. The FD knew exactly what we were doing and were supervising, but the news saw the firetrucks there and just assumed the worst about the whole situation and reported it as such. Imagine our dissapointment! Media is gonna be biased even when they have all the facts at their disposal, it's the nature of their business and we keep paying their bills by watching. Sad but true!

the media will bring the bad out in anything. if we cleaned up trails, they would say were doin it cause we put it there and were being made to do it.

but you would rip down the fence that they put up on their property
That's brilliant.
Smart really smart to assume.

No I would not rip down a fence. But my fellow rangers have... you know gates that people put up on property that is not theirs or roads that are not their own or right of ways that they do not like. The gov/states do get people upset when they don’t include all groups in land use. So upset they see no recourse but to do something they should not.

Nobody's perfect around here, but a little consideration for others using trail systems is necessary to maintain our ability to use it as well. If you don't own the property, it's not a right, it's a priviledge.
Yep.

I am very careful on roads/trails and of course consider it a privilege to use roads on other people’s lands.

I just think it stinks, it's selfish to put signs up everywhere, yeah just buy it and lock it up so no one else can use it. Sounds like the gov./states and some private land owners. Signs signs everywhere the signs, do this don't do that can't you read the sign... not very neighborly to say the least. Hey, I'll just lock up my land like the govs doing. Only greenees allowed to walk thru it... maybe not them either(I jest of course )

It just seems to me we ought to have some public lands where mudders can recreate as well. But maybe we don't have room for all of us? Only extremist walker/hikers types.

Chill. Man oh day.

Am not going to respond any more to this thread too many bad vibs.

OneSpeed hit it right. If we don't have a single voice on this issue, we are self defeating.

All the enviro-nuts and the Sierra Clan are spending tons of money to keep us out of these ares, as they are with all other forms of recreational use of public land. It's not just the OHV's and ATV's they want to keep out, it's the mountain bikes and every other form of use other that flying over it in their litttle private planes.

I think most of us are in agreement that destroying public land, be it a logging road or designated OHV area is not good for any of us or the activities that we participate in. Some of us can't get to BLM meetings or even have an active one where we live, but we can still make a difference in the way we are perceived by the non-wheeling community, which is by far a larger majority with a lot more resources. How? look in the mirror and ask yourself are you part of the problem or are you helping it.

I personnally don't want to see any more areas closed down and I really don't want to see anymore "pay to play" parks when we have tons and tons of open public land that we should have equal access too. But it starts with the actions that we take on the trails. Face if guys, we do have the most intrusive activity on the trails. We NEED to be careful and not destroy everything we use.
