T-19 4-speed

My truck is a 1983 F350 6.9liter. I have a 10.25 Rearend (Dually) w/ a 4.10 rear gear and the tranny is the T19 4-speed. So I'm running really high RPMs at 70mph.
My question is can I put a ZF 5-speed into the truck? What kind of modifications would I have to do to put it in? And where can I find a ZF 5-speed?

Yes, you can install a ZF 5.
Look in the local salvage yards, it must be out of a Ford diesel truck.
7.3 IDI or Power Stroke either one will fit.

Now for the hard question, I have seen them fit right in, I have also seen them be a nightmare to install.

What is the wheelbase on that truck?
You will probably wind up having a custom driveshaft made, that looks like the one I saw them have a nightmare with, it had a roll back bed on it and the wheelbase was something like 165 inches.

There are two ZF 5 trannies behind the diesels, an S42 and an S47.
Measure the distance from the motor block to the front U joint carefully on your truck.
Then measure the distance on the donor truck carefully.
If you could find a truck with the same wheelbase as yours, just get the tranny and driveshaft. Then you may have to move a cross member, but the rest should be easy.

All the hard ones I have seen were in trucks that had a carrier bearing and had to get the driveshaft cut. The roll back was the worst because it also had a PTO drive on it for the hydraulics.

My friend has a 86 250 w/ the 6.9 and a four speed. It is a 4x4 regular cab. Couldnt he just steel a tranny and a driveshaft out of a newer truck like mine? What kind of expenses are involved, he is kind of a tightass.

Do you know which tranny you have?
There is a plate on the drivers side near the shifter area that has the specs.
It should show the gear ratios and what model it is.
Measure the driveshafts in both trucks from the front u joint center to the rear u joint center, that will give you an idea.

Its relativly easy to put a zf in. I converted my truck from automatic to a t19 then a t19 to a zf. its an 85 f250 4x4. I cant speak for sure on the 2x4 side but for 4x4 the c6 tranny the t19 and the zf are all the same lenght therefore no crossmember changes or driveshaft changes. the hydraulic clutch cylinder from the t19 fit right on the zf. i used the same flywheel but with a diffrent pressure plate and clutch disk. for the zf. its not dual mass so i do have a little tranny noise below about 600rpm or when you let the clucth out in say first with no throttle and let it just idle along. I just bumped my idle up to around 800 rpm and hardly ever here the noise. Let me no if you need anyother help. also a 4x4 tranny can be converted to a 2x4 but its expensive and if you are not good at rebuilding trannnies probally not worth the effort. be much easier just to find one thats 2x4.
