The Five speed in my 88 has been making a whining howling noise lately. It gets louderwhen you let off the gas and coast in gear.Noisy whrwaaaaaaa sound in neutral too,The oil level is proper.and besides being able to put it into two gears at once, runs fine. Any Bright ideas
Would the other style of five speed manual (the mazda or something) bolt right in?Or maybe an Exploder tranny?,since mine seems to be the only one in Canada with the FM146.
The Fm 146 and FM145 have a very week thrust bearing. The FM145 is 2" shorter then the FM146 and would require the tranny mount to be moved and your rear shaft lenghtened and front shortened. The TK5 is even shorter beening only a little over 25"s. I dont know the lenght of the M50D but it is a better transmission, it is found in 91 to 00 rangers and explorers with 4.0 engines. They will all bolt up to a 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0
I just put a M5OD out of a 1994 Ranger into my B2 in place of the Fm146. The only thing you need to change is the floor plate (4 bolts under carpet) and the shifter and both shifter boots for the tranny and tcase. Swap was simple. Can even reuse your slave cylinder. The tranny I put in was out of a 4.0 so the gearing is slightly different to match the 4.0's torque curve. Make the B2 scoot. Best thing I have done barnone
