I have a '97 Explorer Sport 4.0 controltrac 4x4. My stock exhaust just fell off the other day. I've got an appointment with a local exhaust shop to put a new exhaust on Wed. I was thinking of having something like a gibson dual sport exhaust put on (two pipes out one side). I was wandering if anyone has had this type or similar exhaust put on their V-6 Explorer or ranger and how it sounded?
Gibson, Flowmaster - all about the same. on my 93 4.0, I have Borla headers and a flow master 40 series muffler. Works good. Anything after market will perform better than the stock Ford systems.
I was really wondering if a dual exhaust would sound good on the V-6 4.0. My plan was to Y-pipe out of the cat into two seperate mufflers and run seperate pipes all the way to the back.
Sound is all in the muffler you chose. 1 or 2 makes no difference. No real reason to run a split set up like you mention. Performance gains come by eliminating the restriction. If you combine the 2 sides then split them you still have the "single exhaust" section as a restriction.
Like Jharger said, you are still running a 'single system', no matter how many end pipes you have. With a dual pipe out one side, you will basically get the same sound as a single. The only difference will be in the cost because you will be adding more pipe and another muffler.
IMO - I would just add a Flowmaster 40 or 50 Delta and run 2.25 or 2.5" pipe from the cat back. I think you would like the sound. It adds a nice low pitch to the exhaust wihtout any pop or growl.
On my 98 Ranger 4.0, I am running a true dual setup - 2.5" pipe back with a Catco cat and Flowmaster 50 Delta on each side. Adds a nice tone. I know you are only looking at one side, but the sound will be equivalent to my Ranger with the exception that I have duals.
Well here the thing my exhaust has two (2) cats, one right after with 2.5" piping, so to be able to run any type of dual exhaust without changing the whole exhaust system I would have to use a dual outlet muffler (with a single inlet) or a Y-pipe setup. I know a guy who is going to do my exhaust for about $125 (this guy has done many of my buddie's and my dad's exhaust which all sound great) which i think is a good deal when I could buy the cat back stock exhaust from Autozone for about $105 and Napa for $115 (without tax). I was thinking of running 2.5" pipe with possible 3" tips.
I did run the duals out one side but the pipes rattled between the shock and traction bar, so I went bak and had him run one of the pipes out the other side. It does not sound like a V8 (but I knew it would not being a V6), but it does sound good. It could be a little louder (I only ran 2" pipe).
