Pardon my ignorance, BUT, where is the "inertia" swich located on my '98 Ranger/Super?
There is some reference to it being behind the "kick" panel on the passenger side.
Pray tell, what are we calling the kick panel.
My "Haynes" "manual" leaves a lot to the imagination.
I am wondering, reading between the lines, if I can not only shut off the switch to relieve the fuel pressure to change the fuel filter.
Why (if I find "it") couldn't I cut the/a (preferably) ground wire, and install another switch (some place to my liking), so I could disable the power to the fuel pump, making it harder for someone to steal my truck.
I am especially interested in this concept, as I am going to New York city in the near future.
All that needs to be done to relieve the fuel pressure is to make certain that the key is off. You will still have some residual pressure in the fuel line that can easily be contained with a shop towel. I do, however like your idea of a second switch to make things harder for a thief.
On my 99 SC, the inertia switch is located on the passenger side fire wall, just above the carpet line, about where your right foot would rest. On my year/model, it wasn't behind the kick pannel, as Haynes said it was.
When I changed the fuel filter, I relieved the fuel pressure by pulling the inerita switch electrical connector, then cranked the engine until it stoped sputtering, then oened the gas cap to relieve tank ressure & prevent it from building while I was disconnecting the filter.
Check the "technical stickey" at the top of this forum, for a good read on the subject.
I found what I believe is the "inertia switch".
Part number looks to be F5AB-9341-AA.
It's in the cab, on the right firewall, under the dash/"glove box".
What I found has a little (red) button I can push up (and hear it click).
Then I can push the button down from the top.
If this is it, I am assuming I can "flip" the switch up to the top, and render my fuel pump inoperative ????
If this is the case, there would be no real reason to install another hidden switch (unless I want), to help foil any attempt to steel my truck.
If I decided to install another switch, which original/factory wire should I interupt the flow of electrons ???
Also, how much future damage would/could be done by altering the factory set up ???
I figure if a "guy" started "grinding" the starter, trying to start the truck.
If It didn't start pretty quick, "he" might walk away, and try somebody elses "stuff".

Yup, thats it. When you want to disable te fuel pump, you could also just "thump" the switch smartly, to trip it & disable the pump, or pull it's electrical connector, but not completely remove it, so it still looks like it's still plugged in & that'll work too, in case you get a bad guy that knows about the Ranger inertia switch, maybe that'll foil him.
