No more 302!!!? =(

Easy answer: EPA. Emissions can't keep up(down) with the requirements on a push-rod engine. Last year for 302 (5.0) was 2000, in the Explorer. I was able to buy a new short block for my 92 Mustang. It is actually an Explorer engine (has a hi-torque cam), but works great in my Mustang.

Uh, if emissions requirements mean the end of OHV (pushrod) engines, then why is GM still producing and developing them? The 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1 liter GM V8s are all OHV designs (so, for that matter, is the main GM "corporate" V6), just like the venerable small block Ford.

Well an OHC (overhead cam) IS an OHV by default. So all Ford's offerings are OHV as well. I don't really see where a pushrod engine would be any dirtier than an OHV. However an OHV would have fewer parts so therefore could cost less to produce. Delete 1 part worth $1.00 and produce a million of them and you've just saved $1 million. In this case you would save the cost of 8 pushrods, and 8 lifters, plus the machining steps in the block for lifer bores and oiling.

I don't know about the durability of the 4.6, but I'm impressed with the power. I drove a '98 F-150 supercab 4x4 5 speed and that thing hauls! Definately more than my 5.0. But I'll take the styling of my truck any day.

I just saw an article last week about the new emission standards for light trucks. It said that GM would have to send ALOT more $$$ to come into compliance than Ford, who shouldn't have much trouble reaching the goal.

Ford has too much at stake to do something stupid. They obviously switched over to the OHC engines for a reason.

Don't worry. There are millions of ford smallblocks just laying around. I have 3 302's alone just laying around. Plus another in my ranger one in the thunderbird. I think we're pretty set.

Does this mean the 351 and 460 are being discontinued as well? Or maybe they already have, its been a couple of years since I have been to the Ford dealer to look at new vehicles and get brochures and stuff.

At any rate, it is possible they could still make the Windsors and 460's for marine or RV applications, or maybe keep them available as crate motors through whatever Ford's version of GM's Goodwrench program is called.

Still, it is sad to see them go. I guess every good engine has its day. I bet people were singin the blues when the flatheads went away for good too...

I'm suprised Chevy has still held on to its Rat motors, what with everybody going to V10's now. Thats ok by me, I'll take a Big Block Chevy over a V10 any day.

I think that you can still custom order these engines out of catalogs and magazines for your project vehicles, either from Ford Motorsports, Summit, or some other catalog. I've seen 302's and 351's there, and I'm not certain, but I think they still sell 460's out of those catalogs, too. Maybe someone who's seen those books a little more can tell us. But yes, I do agree, there should be a better way to get those engines. They are history making engines, so we should be able to get them.

It sure has been a few years. 1996 was the last year for both the 351 and the 460.

The 4.6 isn't too bad a motor... With a few mods it can get up pretty good. The 5.4 is a GREAT motor, wayyyyy better than the 4.6... Really throws you back in the seat (drove my buddies 99 F-150 ExCab). And my dad's F-250 has one and its good. But with huge aftermarket the 302 has it is such a loss that FoMoCo don't make em' anymore... And don't knock the V10 till ya try it... Trust me-- I've driven one and it just makes ya grin... Lots of torque!!

Yes, these engines still are available through Ford Motorsport and probably will be for some time. Last time I checked you could still build a boss 429 through Ford Motorsport. Although they are all aluminum and come from Race Products I believe. Plus they only cost about $10,000 to build!

it seems that every engine will have its hayday only to be discontinued by the manufacturer. like the venerable flat head to the mighty FE series, to the 351 and 460. and now to the 5.0L. but lest we forget, although it is tough to find a good flathead, FE blocks and all the other mentioned will still be around for a while to build and tinker with. with the ever watchful eye of the liberals on our backs, it is our duty to say these last survivors to make them new and provide a good home for them so that our children and our childrens children can remeber what it was like to drve a vehicle with one of these engines. i dont think that just because the 5.0 was discontinued means that the aftermarket will stop making parts for it. i mean the FE has been dead since 76, and the flat head since, well i dont know i am not that old and have never been in a car with one, but the point is, emissions laws will always be inplace and be getting every more stringent, but it is these old engines that burn dinosaures that i will always love. cant beat the sound and feel of a ford engine. i think i am going to go stare at my truck now.
