I was wondering if anyone has done it themselves and what it entails. I would really appreciate any help, or instruction on how to do it. Incase anyone misses my Sig, it's a 1997 F150 4x4 Offroad, extended cab. Thanks in advance.
I just had mine done Wednesday. I took a look at where it was located in relation to a cross member and said to hell with it. It looks to me like the cross member is DIRECTLY below the arm. Meaning you would need to get a box end wrench in there to take the nut off, then I don't even know how you would get a puller in there.
There's an air tool (air hammer? not sure what it's called) that my brother borrowed from a mechanic to get the pitman arm off his chevy. He's got a lift kit and the pirman arm is burried in the lift brackets. Anyway that tool slips in and vibrates the pitman arm off.
If you unbolt the steering box from the frame you can get a puller on the pitman arm.
You dont have to remove the whole box but with it unbolted you can turn it enough to make room to work.
Thanks everyone, well, I had an idea it would a pain in the a** with over three hundred dollars in labor for a $40 part. Thanks guys for the info, I really appreciate it.
Not sure what auto repair places you have in your area, but mieneke replaced mine for around a $160.00, check around or buy all means tackle it yourself. Either way good luck.
Well, I dropped it off at the dealership, I know they are a bit more expensive, but I've grown tired of hack mechanics, just about four months ago, I spent $2000 to have my headers replaced, brakes, and the upper and lower ball joints done. He was supposed to check the entire suspension system for me, but it always felt sloppy and there was a knocking sound everytime I went over bumps. So I brought the truck into the dealership friday to have them go over the entire truck and they found sway bar linkage and pitman arm needed to be replaced. They're charging 180 for the swaybar linkage and 400 for the pitman arm replacement. I did find it kind of high, especially since the part cost about 40 bucks so I figured it was all labor.
The work won't start until monday, so I think I'm going to call Meineke and see if they can give me a price. Thanks I never thought of them, I'd do it myself, but the hours I work, school and family, it's really tough, I need the truck to work.
