When buying gasoline, you should buy 87 octane without ethanol if you want better gas mileage. The higher octane gasolines don't have as much btu content which effects gas mileage. Ethanol definitely has a lower btu content. That's the primary reason diesel gets such good mileage as it is a heavier hydrocarbon molecule which has more btu content.
