Hi! I have an Excursion limited v10 gas, when I bought it about a year ago the mpg was 11.9 now it is 11.4 almost every 2 months it goes down a decimal.
I changed the plugs, air filter, oil and checked the tire pressure, I'm wondering if it is the oxygen sensor (don't know its location)!
i dont know really but i would have to say higher than 11 maybe 12 or 13 i have a 5.4 and im gettin about 12 or 13 adn it sucks i just cant imagine havin 2 more cylinders to put gas into id have to get a 3rd job to pay for that, but i think somethings goin on or maybe your driving style is changing or the weather just a guess.

1. What is the mpg suppose to be?
2. What would cause this to happen?

How many miles are on it? What type of driving do you do? Hwy or City?
What are your tire pressures at? I keep mine at 45 in ft and 55 in rears, I get around 12.7 both city and hwy. I just use the overhead computer. I notice when my wife drives it, the gas seems to go quicker. She likes to be a jack rabbit off the start all of the time and she can never keep a steady speed. I swear...she is going to wear out the torque converter.
Do you get gas at the same station? I try to use only Chevron 87 octane if possible.
Have you kept up on the other maint. such as fuel filters, tranny flushes etc?

And Again Welcome to the site..
Big Rig
Well I haven't done a tranny flush or fuel filter change yet, that's coming up really soon, use to only go to Amoco aka BP but I now share wid shell.
I take my time and gradually accelerate and gradually stop I live in the kinda city, its not alot of stop and go traffic, I hardly drive that often and when I do I don't travel above 10 miles.
I have about 96,000 on it don't drive hard no loads or pulling anything.
Could it be the OXYGEN SENSOR ??Where is it located?? Which Kinda gas works best with this engine type??
I wouldn't guess an oxygen sensor yet. I only have 2000 miles on my V10 but am averaging 12.2 combined highway/city driving wth mostly highway. This tank is going to be much less (guessing 11.0 right now) with mostly city. Don't worry about .5 mpg. It's the big jumps that will get you.
It could be the gas you use. The gas companies reformulate the gas every season. My guess is you are seeing the slight change due to the reformulation. Just a guess though. Could be trash in your fuel lines freakin' with the injectors too. That can account for small changes in fuel mileage..
I use regular old 87 octane in my 2000 V-10. I have 61k miles and I get 12.5 around town and about 15 on the highway. It goes down to about 11 around town and about 14 highway if I use high octane 93.....
BTW, I just switched to 10w-30 from 5w-30 and I have not seen any change in my mileage. My motor runs a whole lot smoother too.
You cannot calculate milage to any decimal points just by getting gas. Different pumps will shut off at different back-pressures, do not worry about any thing under a mile a gallon, I would not even worry until 2 mpg difference.
My V-10 gets about 10 in the city.
I would use plain ole' 87 octane. The brand is up to you, just watch out for the ethanol blended types....the major companies like exxon, bp, citgo, shell, to my knowledge dont use any blends.....just my 2 cents.....
When fuel went over the $3 mark I considered using ethanol but avoided it in the end. I have always been told that the ethanol is cheaper but you get worse gas mileage and in the end costs you more. Does anyone have any experience with ethanol? I was told by a mechanic that he has heard that sometimes the larger engines do better with the ethanol but its a case by case deal and to try it myself and see. I have a 2000 Limited with a V10. Thanks
