I am in college and i only drive my truck about 3 miles a day to school now that i live off campus. I use diesel kleen to try to prevent engine build up. It does get to opt temp before i shut it off though. My question is am i buildin up gunk in my engine and if i take it on the highway should i run it hard, will they help clear it out or is that just a waste of gas. Any other sugestions will help. Thanks guys
Ahh, another college student. Although I live a ways away from campus, my suggestion would be to find a cute girl to take out once every couple of weeks (or preferrably far more frequently) and go somewhere that's more than 5 miles away. That gives you an excuse to drive the truck, and potentially other benefits.
Several people have said to occasionally "drive it like you stole it." - they have said it is good for it, so I do it every know and then...but my wallet sure does scream when I hammer down on it getting on the freeway or passing someone!!!
Well, if you DO want to run it (hard) on the freeway once and awhile (like once a month), be sure that it is up to operating temp long before doing so, as you can cause serious damage to the engine. On the other side of the coin, you wont need to do the freeway thing if you add 3 quarts of ATF to your tank initially, make sure you fill it. Then one quart of ATF once a month. This is a proven method to keep everything clean(including the injectors), and most all of my customers have great things to say about improved performance as well as increased fuel effeciency. ATF is a wonderful detergent. If you soak a carbon covered part in ATF overnight, the carbon will be liquified the next morning.
after reading your suggestion on riding a bike, and an uninformed "the truck will be fine", coming from a senior member really scares me off this board. I dont think ill be coming back to see what other "helpful" hints you will dish out. You just set the pace....seeyall

It would probably be best for you to avoid the internet altogether, or any public setting where differing viewpoints are presented, given your sensitivity.
I guess my numerous commutes of 2 miles or less for the past year was completely uninformed. I wonder my my truck still runs fine? It stands to reason that a vehicle designed to tow over 12 thousand pounds for over 250,000 miles could certainly handle a 3 mile drive. At least mine has been able to do it.
If I lived 3 miles away from work I would ride a bike for the exercise and convenience. Plus it would give me an excuse to ride my bike, and save some money. But that is just me.
ronaldjmorgan, please don't let one uninformed person ruin your FTE experience, (or your day for that matter).
haha sorry guys i my interent went down in the apts for about a day, ya the reason i dont ride a bike...girls would laugh at me? plus its like 100 degrees outside in tx. So ya i guess i wont worry about it to much then. And wow i cant believe that guy got scared away so easily. Tv where u goin to college?
ronaldj...my comment on not running a vehicle 2 miles would mean every vehicle. I drive about 6 non-freeway miles to work (in SoCal I know this sounds impossible) and occaisionally use my 04 PSD to do it. I stop a resturant after about 2 miles, eat, then go to work.
I'm definately concerned with the PSD, my Honda Civic HX gets the call 90% of the time and I change it's oil every 2500 miles because I don't think it runs long enough to remove the nightly condensation which kills the oil and 2 mile condensation makes it worse.
I rarely drive my Harley unless the trip will be over 25 miles because of that reason. Anything will live with short runs but proper operating temp should be reached for a substantial time to eliminate future problems. Good luck...

This is NOT advisable! This is an old-school Diesel fix and is not good for modern engines. Purchase Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne. ATF belongs in a transmission, not your Power Stroke.
