I took my truck through some hills today and noticed a funny noise. it sounds like a tire rubbing plastic very soft though or a big rush of air. it did it while under low rpm cruising up the hill. it seemed to slow down right with this and speed up, kind of surging I guess. but no smoke, not even black. I could step on it and it would shift and hall ***** with no lag in boost as I have seen others mention? Anything I could check into?
I just took my 04 6.0 into the dealer yesterday (2nd time for the same thing) & described the noise your'e asking about. Last visit (2 weeks ago) He said the Ford mechanic couldn't duplicate the problem. This time He say's " oh yeah, we (FMC?) are starting to hear a lot about a problem with the turbocharger" I guess they are going to replace mine, as I haven't read about a repair for this problem. There were a few threads a few days ago regarding this issue. I wonder if there will be a FMC service bulletin about the turbo issue?
Man, that really sucks to hear. There is a dealership close to those hills I was driving on so maybe Ill take it there and try to reduplicate it with a tech.
Click on TurboVaneNoise-1.mpg for a clip recorded by me. You may have to right click and then "save target as " to download the whole .mpg inorder for MS Media Player to play the whole 35 second clip. (9 MB)

What you have described is what my truck was doing several months ago. Try disconnecting the egr and go to the same hill and see if you can get it to happen with the egr plug diconnected. The last flash I got from Ford fixed the problem. What was happening with mine was the egr was popping open while on a steady climb on a modest hill, doing about 60 mph in high gear. It sounded like a tire rubbing in the wheel well or something. I noticed that when I would step on the accellerator, it would downshift and clear up the chirping with the lower gear.
Try what I said in disconnecting the egr. If you determine this is the problem (it stops chirping), I will contact my shop forman friend at the Ford Dealer I use and find out if the flash that worked for me is still available. This seems to be an issue with folks that do most of their driving in the mountains, like I do.

"What did you determine it was??" My Ford Dealer says its nothing to worry about and covered by special service message 18155..."...normal characteristic of this engine and has no impact on engine or turbocharger durability" Personally, I not sure I believe that. My dealer's credibility is rather low at this point. Prior to delivery, I recently found out that the front transmission seal had been repaired (at another dealer) and that they "fixed" a "lose ICP connection. I just want it to hold together like my old 1999 7.3L F250. 92K miles and nary a problem.
olfordsnstone:
The (turbo vane?) noise only occurs when we are loaded up with our truck camper (close to GVWR) so it will be a week or so before we are camping again. I'll pull the plug on the EGR module before I leave and see if the noise reoccurs. My truck has a build date of 10/17/2004. I'm curious if your truck with the new computer flash(which fixed this noise) is older or newer than mine?
LarryJ50, My truck is an 05. The program flash that fixed it changed the shifting strategy where it downshifts slightly earlier, so it downshifts just before the boost gauge reaches the point where it would do that tire rub/chirp sound thing. (It actually was the egr opening) It also would feel like it was missing, like in a gas engine you know. (like epdp99 described)
The Diesel giru at the Ford Dealer I go to advised me to disconnect the egr wire to see if it still did it on the hill. I did so and it did not chirp any more so we identified the problem as egr related. After changing the egr, with no change when plugged in, the flash finally came through and he installed it.
I think there are flashes that have become available since then so I am not sure if the new ones address this problem.
I will ask the Shop Foreman at my local dealership if he has any new info that I can offer you. He is pretty savy at this stuff as he is the one who fixed mine. I'll try and call him tomorrow for you. Maybe he can offer up a program code to try or something. I am in class tomorrow but I will try to call.
Good Luck, Tim
Sorry guys, I didn't get a chance to call the Shop Foreman today. I was in training most of the day, then had to respond to an emergency. I'll try again tomorrow. I'll be in class all week so no promises. Please post if the egr trick works out for you. Make sure that you have the engine off and the key in the off position and out before the plug "falls out". Also, if you look in (I believe) the Tech Folder, you'll see what you should do to reconnect it when going in for service to erase the computer's record of disconnect.
Remember to post the results. I would be curious to see if it does in fact clear up the problem and you all have the same situation that I just got through. It isn't really any more than annoying, but you shouldn't be annoyed by your sweetheart PSD!!! You should just grin
Okay guys, I just called my Service Forman buddy and he says that he thinks my software flash was just before the latest one. (he didn't look it up but believes this to be true) He said the latest flash also addresses the egr issue that I was experiencing, by changing the shifting strategy to shift down and get past the boost build up at low rpms. The latest flash that he indicated to address this is WDS version 38.10.
I hope this works out for ya'll. Good Luck, Tim
