I would love to but dont think it will happen since my grandfather passed away and the accesories money went to traveling expenses for wife, mother and myself. So a regear is out of the question as of now. probably of until next summer when we(wife and I) can restart the fund. But I will defanetely regear before we get a fifth wheel which will hopefully be next summer as well. Probably wont be able to deflash though.
PSD 60L Fx4 any word on what i could ask to try this out. There was obviosly codes for them to change the egr so maybe I can go that route. I could use some insider ideas though.
EPDP99, try sending Matt and email. He is a very knowledgeable hombre. Matt is one of our treasures here on FTE.
Make sure you post your success when you get it figured out. Someone down the road may need the info from your posts.
Good Luck, Tim
Sorry I have taken so long to get back with the PM's (to EPDP99 and others)...I have just been extremely busy lately and haven't spent much time here. I will get back soon.
Had the same problem with my 05. Put 35's on, then got the noise that sounded like a tire rubbing. Also experienced turbo loss while under load going up hill (in shop for that now) Had a Ford tech reprogram and calibrate for tires size, and did not have that issue again. Now have new issue sometimes of a scraping noise upon acceleration?
In response to your PM, there realisitcally isn't much hope of getting them to de-flash.
My first shot would be to try the tire recalibration. I honestly believe that will make a noticeable difference. Just tell them that you want to get the computer and speedometer recalibrated for the 35" tires, and if they are a decent dealer they will know exactly what to do from there.
After that, the issue will need to be played by ear...
So do I understand all this correctly? I have an '03 that has a 2" leveling kit and 35" tires.
I have been frustrated with my fuel mileage 14 - 15 around town and 17 on highway. I decided that it was just due to having a 4x4 crew cab with larger tires, and decided to live with it.
But this thread seems to tell me I should ask my dealer to calibrate my computer for 35" tires? And then on top of that I should re-gear just for 35's? Don't the FX4's come with 33's? The gears/computer can't recal for just 2" increase in tire diameter?
Matt, I really appreciate and respect your experienced opinion. If you are around do I understand this correctly? Not to diminish anyone else's experienced opinion, I appreciate all the info I learn here.
Last question. Isn't a re-gear in the $1,000's for cost of parts alone?
The recalibration is to correct the shift points...by downshifting sooner, you are reducing load...in EPDP's case, this *should* help reduce the turbo farting and huffing.
As far as fuel economy, recalibration should theoretically help, but realistically the gains will be nil. The regear WILL help both mileage and acceleration.
As for a regear, parts and labor together should be around 1500 dollars.
Once again I am grateful for this site. I will just re-state what has been said before. Take the posts about problems for what they are, posts about problems with the goal of finding solutions. I found another valuable nugget of information here on this site that may help with my problem. Thank you Matt, and everyone else that contributes to finding solutions rather than unproductive venting.
Got the truck back yesterday. They could find nothing wrong with it. At least I still have 30k miles of warranty left, and 94k on the motor. They also said that when the exhaust pressure equals the turbo pressure, the turbo will go out. Does this sound right?
