Got the truck back yesterday. They could find nothing wrong with it. At least I still have 30k miles of warranty left, and 94k on the motor. They also said that when the exhaust pressure equals the turbo pressure, the turbo will go out. Does this sound right?
Well, considering that the exhaust backpressure exceeds the boost pressure about 99% of the time (thats how a turbo works)....I don't see very much validity in that statement.
Click on TurboVaneNoise-1.mpg for a clip recorded by me. You may have to right click and then "save target as " to download the whole .mpg inorder for MS Media Player to play the whole 35 second clip. (9 MB)

I am having the exact same problem. Service is telling me it is normal. Has your problem been resolved ? Problem originally occurred when pulling a trailer. I can simulate the problem by getting turbo pressure up between 10 lb and 20 lb and letting off the gas pedal.
Gunpowder, When you let off the accellerator pedle, it will do that. That is what they call turbo fart. If it does it while ascending a hill, with moderate speed and steady pedle, that is a different story. I understand that your situation may not be exactly like mine but I can only attest to my own experience. The newer flash I received that changed the shifting strategy to downshift sooner eliminated my truck doing this. I noticed that on the turbovane noise 1.mpg clip, the boost gauge dropped when it occurred. This is what mine did too. After the flash, the boost gauge would get just below where it was ready to release boost, and do that thing, and it would downshift prior. I dont know if this will help you or not. I was a little disappointed when EPDP99's problem turned out to be something else. It sounded identical, and so does yours.
For what it's worth, good luck, Tim
Tim that was the exact noise and issues i was having, but they wont give me a version of the software used. I havent been able to retest if noise is there because i have been very busy, turbo lag sucks and it does the farting way worse when i let off the gas pedal and fuel economy went to crap. dove 3/4 tank on highway and 1/4 town and got 12.6 MPG hand calculated.
The symptom was first noticed when pulling a travel trailer weighing approx. 7,000 pounds. The problem occurred while driving up an incline, when the engine / transmission tried to shift from overdrive into 4th gear, the turbo pressure gauge reading ~ 20 pounds the noise and hesitation would happen. It also happened when the engine / transmission tried to shift back from 4th gear into overdrive (when topping the crest of a hill). Each time the turbo pressure gauges reads ~ 20 pounds. Once a “new program” was downloaded the problem appears to have stopped when shifting from overdrive into 4th gear, but the problem still remains when shifting from 4th gear into overdrive.
Same Problem here. Had the VGT(?) Valve replaced and 3 Computer Re-Flash's. Still has the porblem. I deal with a very good dealership so they have been trying to fix it. I have just modifed my driving style and get the truck to down shift sooner. Still is a bit frustrating as one would think that a new truck should not have this problem.
IF this IS the same (or similar) issue that I had with mine, when I persuaded the egr plug to "fall off" it quit doing it. The only problem I experienced after the egr fell off was the check engine light would illuminate. I don't need to persuade the egr plug anymore since my last reprogram (flash), but while having problems this did make that annoying issue go away.
Have you guys tried that? Just an idea for you.
i did try it and it only did it two times instead of the 30 on the way out of town. When it went to the dealer the egr was replaced because it was stuck in the open position. Truck only had 4000 mi when it went in with no long idling, maybe 10mins max. There were multiple codes on it that didnt illuminate the light though. So dont know when the codes were thrown. it has yet to do the same thing however turbo lag and power seems to be quite less as well as mpg with the last tank getting an average of 12. hand calculated with 80% highway on that tank. Once i fill up i will check an all town driving MPG.
Guys, I've had the same problem (the 'chuffing' sound like the tire scraping the wheelwell) since I got my '05 last September. I have since added a 4" lift and 35's, but it was doing it long before I made that change. I've noticed that I only get the noise when I'm going up a slight grade, usually when I'm behind somebody that's doing 45 in a 55, so I'm kind of 'caught' where I'm barely putting my foot on the gas but I'm going uphill. Once it starts 'chuffing', if I put my foot into it, the RPMs come up, it drops a gear, and the sound goes away.
Is the problem going to cause any long term issues with the turbocharger?
And also, I've read some posts about recallibrating and regearing - do I really need to regear to run 35's? I've got 3.73 gears right now, and they seem to work alright. I was told by the Ford Tech here in Renton that the '05 speedo cannot be recalibrated - the last year they could do it was '04, and I'd have ot buy an aftermarket recalibration unit (Superlift). Am I being sold a line of BS?
It can be recalibrated - I had mine done by a Ford tech. Shouldn't have to regear with 35's, not that much bigger than stock 33's, unless of course you want to.

Stock tires are 31.4 inches with 265/75/16's. Or around that.
ANYTHING over 33" will benefit significantly with regear. IMO, not regearing is par with doing a "half-***" job.

Mine (05 F350) came stock with 275/70/18 (33.16") with 3.73 gears. - also the 250's come with 17" rims/. I now have 35's with no problems towing or driving.
