Hi Folks,
great thread,I don't have a cure either, but have simular problems 94 150 302 4x4 auto.every now and then it feels like the trany jumped out of gear and then re-engages with a bang, steering colum was fixed due to a thief trying to punch the ignition switch (appears like?) asked the mechanic while doing some engine work,he thought that some switch/sensor may be acting up on the trany.fluid was good had a tranny flush last year ,mechanic said it was "sweet" found out that ment good
I haven't had the exact behavior but similar...when I would shift from drive to reverse it would engage with a bang. Unfortunately I don't know the exact cause, the tranny was under warranty and the dealer fixed it. But I don't think it was something that could have been fixed without opening the transmission case and replacing the part.
I also have a loud bang when goin from drive to reverse and vise versa, but all that is is your wore out rear end gears (more than likely). Peak down between the bed and the cab out your rear window (if equipped) and watch your driveshaft as you have your foot on the brake and go from reverse to drive. Watch your driveshaft turn a little and then SLAM!
JoeVB - Your comment on the safety switch explains why the transmission place told me they checked the safety switch and didn't find a problem. But you have starting problems only with it - not the tranny slipping?
Jacobite - your problem sounds just like mine - my tranny fluid was also goo. I also had the steering column fixed several years ago after a theft.
the loud clunk when going into reverse, is more than likely because of the crush collar on your pinion. get a new one, and put it in, use lots of llock tite, and torque to specs.
