De-Tune for longer life?

Is it possible to de tune the 6.0 engine for longer life? The International 6.0 has 230 hp & 620 lbs torque and no problems. Isn't it the boosted hp that is causing the reliability issues with the Ford engine?

Hmmm...dejavu...Where have I seen this before?

IMO, detuning has the potential to create more issues. Detuning might cause the engine unwarranted stress due to the fact that it is not able to perform as originally designed. Under tow / haul conditions this may in fact load up the system. Kind of a programming castration so to speak.

The opposite effect of to much programming.

Isn't it the boosted hp that is causing the reliability issues with the Ford engine? Splitting hairs here but, HP is not a force it is an AD man's creation. HP=Torque X RPM divided by 5252. International governs the VT365 at 2600 RPM while Ford governs the 6.0 L at 3600 RPM. I suspect if you changed the MAX governed RPM you might just get the same reliability. Some of the programers are reported to have the ability to alter the RPM limiter, they might be used to lower yours.

I would be interested to hear how the engine performs with a MAX RPM of 2600. I suspect it would be just fine as I rarely go above that RPM myself.

Even towing across the passes. Manually selecting gears.. I've seldom gone past 3000rpm. And never hit 4000. I pretty much limit my driving to be well below 2800, most often I shift below 2000. And since 2000rpm in fifth gear is just near 70mph, there's not much more I need. So... Driving like a concious adult, I guess just doing that I've been running the engine "detuned". If that's it, all there is is a rev limiter difference between the 365 and the 6.0.

I try to keep my RPMs below 2600 also. My new truck is doing almost 75 at 2000 RPM (18 inch wheel option) so I normally try to drive at 1800 to 1900 most of the time.

Kind of like driving sane to save fuel

Just kidding, I know what you mean...although it implies that if people don't drive like you they not conscientious.

I'm all for a detune if I could gain some MPG's. Most of my driving does not need all that power.

Maybe in 07 they can have that gee wow super power 6.4 twin turbo headache waiting to happen and the nice as designed International 6.0 as they offer in the F650 trucks ...trucks that are built for far more weight load than the 250 - 550 series ...

I expect to see 2 diesel options available for the F-250, 360's at some time in the near future. I would like to see a smaller displacement motor with better mpg and maybe a 6 speed auto or 7 speed manual with better splits. (I think the twin turbos are to get rid of the EGR, I hope, I hope, I hope.) I do pull a 5-w but I don't mind shifting down a gear or so to get up a mtn.

Why do you have such a negative tone toward an engine that hasn't even been released yet?

IMO...The smaller twins are there to rid Ford of the variable vane turbo. I fear the EGR Valve will remain. Albeit, with less negative impact to the new turbo strategy.

because every engine released by every manufacturer has problems ... the more gizmos and tech the worse it is .... i'll need a new truck by 07 and it needs to be dependable .... i'm paid by the mile ...shop time for de-bugging is lost money ...let those that want to play buy whatever ... some of us need dependability right from the git-go ....

not another engine that seems as though the majority of Fords own dealer techs have no clue .... I feel lucky in that I found an awesome dealer that really knows diesels ... been to quite a few across the US that are clueless ...

my truck has 125,000 miles on a new engine ...engine one was toast around 3,000 ....

kw, I agree, I think the twins are to get rid of the variable vane thing. (And to reduce turbo lag.) Can't we hope the EGR will vanish?
