power steering pumps usually just fail give no warning usaully. even a new rebuild could be faulty or one yo ugot of a donor pickup.i have a 76 f 250 with true power steering and the newer pump and it just bolted right on no modifications to the bracket. for the pump for the true power steering there was some work that was done there but takes to long to write. usually you can call ford and they can fax you a parts break down of gear boxes and those things.
What is true power steering?
What other parts are required for true power steering? huh
well i have a 76 highboy that came stock with power assist or armstrong steering. i had to get the gear box off of a two wheel drive 1/2 ton pickup extend my steering shaft and fab a bracket up to mount to the frame. then i put a power steering pump off of a newer 78 79 ford with the big filler cap instead of the little 1/2 inch holed one

Good info. Do you have an FE? or 460? Just wondering how you got the power steering to fit with the large filler cap...if you have an FE?
If it is a conversion kit...or something...I'm all over it.
I have a friend that is a Service Manager for a Ford Dealership, and he says all the old stuff from the 70's is on film, and they can not print it. He is also having a difficult time finding parts in stock. Every web sight I have checked only list seal kits, or replacment gear box. I need a rebuild kit for mine. I took the gear box off again last night, and will tear it down tonight and check it again tonight.
As for the pump, the one I have is the one that has the large housing with the large supply line coming out the middle of the back. I purchased it through NAPA Auto. They had it on the shelf. It is actually the third pump that has been on it. The pumps do keep failing. But I think it may be from metal shavings from the gear box. That is why I tore it down a while back.
The funny thing is, one time it works, then without doing anything, it just stops working, then the next day when you go to check it out, it works again. My fear is if the wife gets in the truck or I am pulling my Camper, it will stop working and kill someone.
fordfury469 it has a 390 in it. and i didnt change anything to fit the bigger pump in there i had to make the hoses to my gear box but that was it.
Great news! I will look into it more...and switch to the larger fill hole. I was planning on changing out the power steering pump anyway...before winter hits. Thanks!

For what it is worth...I went through 3 NAPA power steering pumps until one actually worked. Finally on the 3rd...which only lasted about 2 months...I asked for my money back. The last pump I purchased was from Jeff's Bronco...more $$, but hasn't failed yet. I will change it out because I want the large filler hole...but still works.

I will proabably end up changing the pump again. I tore down the gearbox again last night and inspected it. No worn worm shaft, gears, Steel *****, Bad Seals, nothing. Kind of beating my head against the wall on this one. I am still leaning to a loose piece of rubber plugging a line or something. I am going to flush the entire system tonight.
One interesting thing I found last night when I was looking for information on the Saginaw box. I come across a web sight where this guy modified his pump for Rock Crawling. He needed more pressure and flow at lower RPM's. In the outlet fitting is a spring and ball. He drilled the nozzle and seat out a 1/8 bigger, then stretched the spring out to 2 inches. This seemed to be feasiable for what it is intended. As my next project is going to be a late 70's Ford truck converted into a dedicated Rock Crawler, I was wondering if anyone has tried this or knows anything about it.
