Power Steering Trouble?
The other day we had some icy conditions in which I got my truck into a 360 while pulling into the parking area at work. I did lock up the steering. Strangely enough the same spot I looped my F150 earlier this year no less. The power steering felt sluggish and tight. I parked the truck in my spot and checked the steering fluid. The fluid was low which was unusual since I check all fluids regularly.
At lunch I went out to the truck and noticed an oil slick coming from the truck. I took a look and noticed wetness around the steering box. When I went home later that night, I added some steering fluid and cycled the wheels. If felt better but kept an eye on it for the next few days. There appeared to be no fluid loss.
Here is what I feel.
At idle with no movement, the steering feels like manual steering not power. Raise the RPMs the steering comes back. Also if I turn on the street in which I am running low RPMs stiff steering like a low speed approach.
What am I looking at here? Air in the system? How? Blown steering box or pump? before I take the truck in, I rather do some basic troubleshooting before using the ESP on the truck for something stupid. If something more I am just going to wonder if the truck is Ford Tough. That is pretty lame is a little spin out took out the steering.
Thanks!
Quick update. I dropped the truck off after I made an appointment. The service adviser said the power steering pump was cause of the leak. There was a TSB in reference to my problem so it would be covered under the ESP. So just a deductible this time around. They had to keep the truck overnight since there the updated parts were not in stock. I should be getting my truck back today.
