alternator problems

My Escort's car battery light suddenly came on and a DVM reading on the battery showed that it is not running and slowly drops to 12.3V when the engine is running. I guess the alternator is not charging. I was advised to buy a new alternator. Any insights on this?

Poor quality alternator is a probable cause Inspect it first for voltage and amperage output before resorting to a new one. Try also to load test the battery. you can try some ford parts here: Ford Parts Discount.
