My brother has a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0L, a while back he took it in to the shop because when he was letting off the clutch(its a stick), the rpms would stay up... They replaced a sensor or 2 on it, and after a BIG deal about doing warranty work he got it back and it did ok for a while, but now it has started it again. Any ideas of what to do? I have a good idea he's not the only one with this problem... Thanks for any help
I've been combating this problem on my '99 4.0 for several months. I took it to the dealer to ask about any recalls, but there were none. The service rep pulled up a TSB about this problem which mentioned a chafing issue on a wire loom that passes under the driver's seat area. It seems to be a somewhat common problem for this motor, and I haven't found any definitive answers or fixes. It's irritating as hell though, and hard on my trannie trying to shift into first from a stop when the engine is still running at 1200 RPMs. I scanned for codes and found none, and have already replaced the IAC (idle air control solonoid/valve). I couldn't find any vaccum leaks either. It idles okay w/o the IAC hooked up, but since it's a very slow return to idle, the computer seems to be using the IAC to make slow corrections for something. I also asked the service rep about any newer versions revisions for the computer that it might need to be "flashed" to (as someone here suggested to me when I posted about it), but he said there were none.

Mr. Man, I had a similar problem, but mine is an automatic. A new IAC solved my problem. Tell your brother to take it back to the dealer, they have a 12/12 warranty on their work.
