I would like to get a flowmaster exhaust kit for my 03 super cab ranger FX4. The problem is that they only make one for a 90-94 ranger and I do not want one made by the local muffler shop. So the question is, what would need to be done to make that kit fit my truck? If nobody knows, where could I find the specs (front tube length, muffler length, rear tube length, and hanger locations) for the cat-back exhaust on a 90-94 super cab 4x4 Ranger? Thanks for the help.
I suppose there's a chance you could get lucky and find it a bolt-in deal, but I'd be surprised if you didn't have to make some sort of modifications. Do you have any welding capabilties at all, or maybe access to some?
Your '03 already comes from the factory with stainless pipe, so unless you're hooked on replacing the entire assembly w/ oversized mandrel-bent stainless, just check your local parts store for a replacement Flowmaster muffler and clamp it in there. If you do want a complete kit, check JBA, Borla, and Gibson. Keep in mind that the 4-banger and 3.0 both come w/ the same size pipe as the 4.0, so upsizing a 3.0 (if that's what you have) might be unnessisary.
I do have a welder so any small mods would be no problem and I do have a 4.0. I will only go with flowmaster because I heard it makes it sound alot like a 5.0 and I do not want any other sound. The only two options I'd have would be buying a 2 1/4, 40 or 50 series flowmaster muffler for $100 or $110, or get the kit with the mandrel-bent stainless set-up for only $80 more and make it fit. Half the reason for getting a new exhaust would be to ditch the ugly pipe sticking out the back. In the pic on Summit's web site the way each piece is bent matches a 03 system. Only only problem would be length and I called summit for that and they were go for nothing. I might have to find a 90-94 driving around here and take some measurements.
I have either a 40 or 50 series, can't remember off hand, on my 4.0 - it will not sound like 302. It's a little louder is all but sounds basically stock. I even have Borla headers on it.
If you want a free & non-permanent fix to get that sound, open up your air filter box and remove the sound baffle in the bottom. First, you'll get a lot more air. Second, it will give a nice deep rumble when you put your foot in it. If you decide you don't like it, you can always put it back in. I had a helluva time trying to remove the airbox to get it out, so I just whaked it with the sawzall.
