Idle problem 2001 Sport Trac

I just changed the DPFE thing on the truck last weekend. The check engine light is off and the buggy is running great. The only problem I have now is that is will die on me at a stop light.

Anyone else out there had a problem with the idle on their trucks? If so, what was the cause. No problems other than that. It doesn't do it all the time but it is doing it. No check engine light, mileage is great. No other symptoms other than the occaisonal stall at idle.

Might have a idle control motor sticking.. might also just need to relearn thing still... disconnect the negative battery cable and let it sit for an hour or so... touch the negative cable to the positive cable - this will discharge the computer power... then reconnect the negative cable... it will be a little goofy the first 50-100 miles until it figures everything out.

This may be all it needs.. good luck.

It's possible it may just have to re-learn but I doubt it. Give it a try but if that doesn't solve you're problem I bet its the IAC valve. Had to replace mine at about 60K, wife used to have a 97 Sport with the 4.0L and we had to replace the IAC at about 55k. You could try just cleaning it, but you'll probably have to replace eventually.

Thanks so far for the replies.

It behaved a little better today but it is still tentative when I pull up to a stop light. Weird thing, when the a/c kicks on at idle you can see the rpms increase slightly. When the compressor is off is when it wants to stall. I am sure there is something internal that ramps up the revs when the a/c is running.

Where is the IAC thing you are talking about?

If you take the plastic cover off the top of the engine you'll see it there, there'll be a small connecter going to it, just pull that off and then there's just a couple of screws holding it down.

When the AC compressor kicks on the IAC valve is automatically opened up a little bit more to try to compensate for the extra load (this is also true for the power steering), so probably there is enough extra air flowing to keep you going when its on. In reality if it's working properly it should be able to compensate no matter what (within reason), but I think those valves just get gunked up and then open and close kind of erratically
