I just had my 6.0 PSD serviced and asked them to check out an idle problem. Sometimes the truck shakes at idle and sounds like it is a gas engine that is about to choke out. It also puffs smoke out the exhaust when doing this. Also, sometimes at stop lights the engine will idle up for a split second on it's own and make the truck act like it wants to surge forward. The truck only has 3,000 miles on it. Any ideas on the problem? The dealership found nothing wrong! This 6.0 is very impressive and the transmission with it is great, but I need to fix this idle problem. On the other hand, our other truck with the 7.3 PSD runs like a champ!
got rough idle too, truck like a swiss watch just not when on idle. I am told that there is a new program for the computer out that is supposed to help fix problem. I guess the program came out some time early last week. Got info from a Big Ford Truck dealership just out side of Louisville, KY. They said that they have changed all 8 injectors in one truck and injector controller sensor and it didn't help. They hoped that the new computer program would do the trick.
Using an oil with an incorrect API specification could possibly cause the rough idle. The oil has a tendency to foam due to the way it's used in this engine. Are you using an oil with an API specification meeting the requirements mentioned in the owners manual?
Ours started doing this at about 1000 miles. Whatever oil the factory puts int the engines is what it was running. I am not sure what oil the dealership used at the 3000 mile service, but the rough idle is still there.
A friend of mine had the same problem with his brand new 6.0 last week. He took it in to the dealer and they reprogrammed the computer. He says that, at least for now, the problem is gone. He told me that they did an "R15 code update" to his computer. I am going to check back with the dealer tomorrow.

I also had the rough idle, They changed a chip in the back, on top of engine, 6.0 L it now runs smooth, BUT I went from 19/20 mpg highway to 16/17 and towing from 14.4 avg. to 10 mpg. I want my old chip back, I would put up with a raise of 200 rpm when idling. Rob
What is Interesting to Me...is that some people ....after having read about all the various problems on this website with the 03 , 6.0 diesel engine that they would proceed to Purchase an 03 truck and after a 1000 or so miles , they're back here posting about the very same problems ...that is Occuring to their New . 6.0 diesel. Just amazing , really!!! Then , you start having to jump thru the HOOP for Ford and they know Damn good and well what the Deal is. .....sk
